DELVA 'AFRIKA KORPS LOST LIQUOR' SPECIAL BRAND WHISKY c.70cl, with reproduction label; together with two empty Delva 'Lost Liquor' bottles for 'Old Jamaica Rhum' and 'The Truth Old Tom Gin' respectively; and a c.70cl bottle of Richard Langguth Landvogt red 1975 (4)Provenance: By repute, gifted to the vendor by the family of a US Army veteran who served in the 1970’s.Note: Retains paper pamphlet 'A legend of Lost Liquor' by Colonel John. M. Ganstad, US army (Ret.) detailing the legend-This is a fascinating bottle. The contents of which are some of the near 250,000 gallons of whisky, discovered along with stores of Cognac, Rum and Gin by Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Corps in a wine cellar in North Africa during the early stages of World War II. After sharing the spoils among his men, the remaining casks were shipped to the Italian village of Nettuno, Italy in the holds of Axis ships. The town was then captured by Allied forces in 1944, the alcohol along with it, and US forces ordered it to be bottled at the local Delva Distillery, to be distributed among the troops. The bottles were tested by a long-forgotten Allied Military Government unit called the R.A.A.C. who labelled them, “chemical tests carried out on Delva Liquors showed all to be within standards of purity prescribed for use by Allied Military personnel.”After the war the bottles were transferred into the care of the Linz National Customs Forces in Austria where they remained untouched until the 1970’s. Then, in early 1976 the Afrika Corps “Lost Liquor” bottles were released for sale, predominantly within US Army Class VI stores. Many of the bottles had significant damage to the labels, so they were removed and replaced with replicas that looked identical but read, “this is a true and faithful reproduction of the original labelcombination on this bottle” (and now bore volume and ABV indicators). The bottles however are still those filled at Delva, and the liquid is still that discovered by the Nazi Afrika Corps forces in the 1940’s.

SPRINGBANK 1989 12 YEAR OLD RUM WOOD FINISH CAMPBELTOWN SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1989Bottled: 04/2002One of 5700 bottles released54.6% ABV / 70cl There are very few distilleries left in Scotland that have the capacity to carry out 100% of the whisky making process onsite, but Springbank can make that claim. Situated in Campbeltown (the former whisky capital of the world) the distillery produces three distinct styles of single malt: lightly peated Springbank, heavily peated Longrow, and triple distilled, unpeated Hazelburn. Despite being a relatively small distillery, Springbank has cultivated a global cult following, with older expressions such as their legendary Local Barley series commanding eye-watering sums at auction.

BMC V 441.The nine books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings by Valerius Maximus, a collection of around 1000 short tales and anecdotes of Roman life, arranged under topical headings as exempla, with an extensive commentary by Oliverius Arzignanensis of Vicenza, was popular throughout the Renaissance as it provided the main sourcebook of information on aspects of Roman life that were increasingly admired and emulated, especially in Italy and France. First printed in Strasbourg about 1470, this edition was printed nine times by 1500 (this being the fifth); in 1510 the eminent Parisian printer and editor Josse Bade published an edition with his own commentary added to that of Arzignanensis that went through some 30 printings in the 16th century in Paris, Venice and Milan.James Sotheby (1682-1742), a London merchant, was a keen collector of manuscripts and early printed books, who purchased Ecton Hall, Northamptonshire in 1673.The estate passed on to his son, also named James, who was born in 1682. The younger James's collection of books and manuscripts was inherited by his grandson William Sotheby, who was born on 9 November 1757, the eldest of four children of Colonel William Sotheby of the Coldstream Guards (the fourth son of James Sotheby and the grandson of the original purchaser of Sewardstone) and Elizabeth Sloane. The library at Ecton Halll was subsequently sold at auction on 24 July 1924.
