Laetitia Trelawny, 1737, A sampler in monochrome stitched with an obelisk, inscribed Sermon Facia Consoria, In Memory of my Worthy and Only Son Charles Trelawny, who died of ye small pox in the 16 year school. This Obelisk is worked by his affectionate mother, Laetitia Trelawny - 1737. Inscribed at base: Charles Trelawny - The Only Son of Harry and Laetitia Trelawny, Born February the 25 1721, died November 26 1735. 74 x 114cm. Together with a companion sampler, worked similarly with mourning father and mother Laetitia, and three daughters, the obelisk similarly stitched with eight trees, dated 1739. (2) Footnote: The mother, Laetitia, overwhelmed with grief devoted her time to making these tapestries as a monument to her son with his parents and three sisters, mourning his loss. "She never stirred from (the vestry) except to the chapel, for twelve months, till the work was finished. She saw no visitors; and not more of the sun than she let in upon her work from the half-closed windows. The room was hung with black, and her sighs were oftener heard than her words." A pair of impressive red and grey veined Cornish serpentine obelisks, possibly by John Organ of Penzance, height 63.5cm (one with damage). (See illustration) Condition Report: lot 62 - one of the obelisks have been broken and glued together approx 3" up from its pedestal. There is a chip to its tip and a few chips on the edges of its length. On the 2nd plinth down the platform has a corner missing and another chip. 2 chips underneath which could be a break running across the bottom and glued. The other obelisk has small chips to the edges along its length. The base has been broken along its corner and a few chips to the underside.
