The first two books by Edward Conor Marshall O Brien (1880-1952), Irish sailor, naval architect and ship builder, author, aristocrat, intellectual, and mountaineer, very scarce in first edition. O Brien was the owner and captain of one of the first boats to sail under the tri-colour of the Irish Free State, and was the first amateur Irish sailor to sail around the world. His boat Saoirse was reputedly the first small boat (42-foot, 13 metres long) to sail around the world since Joshua Slocum completed his voyage in the 'Spray' during 1895 to 1898. O Brien was the greatest seaman of his era, a universally acknowledged pioneer of international ocean sailing, 'Across Three Oceans' is his account of his groundbreaking voyage in 1923-25 around the world in his ketch Saoirse. O’Brien’s voyage began and ended at the Port of Foynes, County Limerick, Ireland, where he lived, and was the first to circumnavigate the world by way of the three great capes: Cape Horn, Cape of Good Hope and Cape Leeuwin. 'From Three Yachts' is the authors account of his various voyages on his three most notable boats, Kelpie, Saoirse (meaning "freedom" in the Irish language) and Ilen. O Brien spoke fluent Irish, was an early member of Sinn Fein (as well as the United Arts Club), and was outspoken in the cause of Irish Home Rule—all of which fairly unusual for a Protestant. By 1914 such politics had become ‘relevant’, and he joined the Irish Volunteers—a proto version of the IRA—using his own yacht, the Kelpie, to help Erskine Childers run guns into Ireland (from Germany) in the preludial months of WWI. Man of adventure and ardent believer in nascent free state, he nonetheless soon lost sympathy for the more violent aspects of Irish republicanism. In an improbable volte-face, he promptly joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in which he served throughout WW1. He was a ship builder and naval architect, designing the Saoirse (in which he circumnavigated the globe) and the Ilen (a Falkland Islands service ship), both being built at the Baltimore Fishery School in Kerry. In 1928 he married the artist Katherine Clausen, and in the early 1930s they spent an idyllic time cruising with Saoirse in the Mediterranean, working together on books and articles which he wrote and she illustrated. Kitty Clausen’s tragically early death in 1936 ended his happy partnership after just eight years, and by 1940, Saoirse was sold. O Brien was too old for active services when World War II broke out in 1939, but he served the allied cause as a skipper for the small Ships Pool, delivering support vessels across the Atlantic. After the war he returned to Foynes Island where, aged 72, he died in his sister’s house in 1952. (2)

CRIMEAN WAR. Captain Walter Francis Balfour, 2nd Rifle Brigade. Six autograph letters to his uncle, Colonel Bower, written from Sebastopol and Headquarters, 10th August 1855–15th February 1856, accompanied by a memorandum relating to a Gazette for his actions on 8th September 1855. These letters provide detailed accounts of life during the siege of Sebastopol, including observations on key military engagements, logistical challenges, and troops' morale. Excerpts include:Sebastopol, 10th August 1855 Balfour anticipates an imminent assault while reflecting on the burden of increased responsibilities after the death of Captain Edward Roland Forman: "They are talking of another assault soon... I am so worked having succeeded to poor Forman's Company & having just lost my pay Sergt I have all the accounts to look after."Sebastopol, 10th September 1855 Writing two days after the storming of the Redan, Balfour describes the chaotic and costly assault, commending the bravery of fallen comrades but lamenting the failure to capture the position: "It has pleased God to bring me safe out of the most desperate encounters that we have had this campaign. Sebastopol is ours. The attack on the Redan was a failure, the young soldiers would not face it, & in consequence our loss in officers is fearful." He notes significant casualties: "The Light Division alone have lost 70 – killed & wounded – & 1000 men." He also observes the destruction within Sebastopol: "The Russian fleet is all destroyed with the exception of a few steamers."Camp Headquarters, 5th October 1855 A primarily personal letter, mentioning his unit’s role as a guard of honour and addressing rumours of his injury during the assault on the Redan: "Some fool who was in the Redan with me said I had been hit and taken."Undated letter, postmarked December 1855 Balfour expresses frustration about a lack of recognition in dispatches despite his commendable service, citing a public compliment from his brigadier: "I believe I ought to have been Mentioned in Dispatches once before & I was complimented by the Brigadier... on the success of my efforts at the advance sap."Headquarters, 19th December 1855 Writing candidly about the challenges of army life and the behaviour of troops, Balfour critiques the financial incentives given to soldiers: "The men are too well off – they get too much money that they are perpetually drunk." He describes acting to maintain order: "I pulled one of their huts down, & have hauled the chap over to the Provost Marshall." He also lists essential supplies lost to the fortunes of war: "My revolver I lost in the eighth of September in the scrimmage... My saddle bags were burnt including contents at Varna."Private, 15th February 1856 Reflecting on his service, Balfour notes his frequent command of sharpshooting and covering parties and lack of promotion: "If there ever was a volunteering, sharpshooting or covering party... I had always the command of it... but as on the 18th of June poor Forman a Junior Officer had the command of a like party I would have been promoted had he not fallen." Footnote:Walter Francis Balfour, born 8th January 1831, son of Francis Balfour and Margaret Bower. Married Jane Amelia Kier, daughter of Patrick Small Kier on 25th October 1866. Died 24th February 1909, aged 79. He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Rifle Brigade. In 1862, he unsuccessfully claimed the Lordship Balfour of Burleigh as the heir male. He lived at Fernie Castle, Fife, Scotland and held the office Deputy Lieutenant of Fife.

Escort-based RS1600i superbly prepared by Lavant Garage for Group 1 and presented in iconic Royal Mail 'Datapost' livery. Followers of saloon car racing in the mid-1980s will certainly remember the distinctively presented 'Group A' Datapost RS1600i Escorts prepared by Richard Longman Racing for himself and Alan Curnow. Whether it was the fact that the staid old Post Office had decided to go racing, or the fact that the cars were very competitive, or simply that they were painted Post Office Red and looked great is not clear, but they are well remembered and have been the subject of diecast scale models from half a dozen different companies. The Datapost-liveried Escort on offer here is not one of those early Richard Longman cars but was built to a high standard in the early 2000s from a rust-free shell to RS1600i specification and raced successfully in CTCRC with numerous class wins. It subsequently spent ten years in a heated garage before our vendors instructed classic Ford Escort RS1600i specialists, Lavant Garage in Chichester, to recondition the car and fully prepare it to return to the circuits. All the safety equipment is up to date including a new fire extinguisher with 16 years of life and all correct nozzles and mountings. Most importantly, the list of components renewed or serviced on this RS is exhaustive (full details in the history file) The CVH engine features Accralite forged high-compression pistons, ARP big end bolts, Kent race cam (solid lifters), Vernier cam sprocket, Bosch K Jetronic PI, DTA management, an Ashley 4-1 tubular exhaust manifold, Mocal oil-cooler and Direnza alloy radiator, all of which contribute to a willing and respectable 145bhp. The Quaife 5-speed gearbox is straight-cut with a Motorsport LSD and ZF Sachs paddle-clutch. Much of the drive train and brakes (AP) are new as is most of the fuel system with a high pressure fuel pump, injectors and 25-litre foam-filled tank. All the bearings are new with ZX1 Super Grease and the car is fitted with a race wiring loom and the essential heated screen. This beautifully-presented 1980s 'homologation special' with its period correct livery could be a very cost effective way into some lovely championships, including the HRDC Gerry Marshall Trophy and CTCRC 'Group 1' and is a very rewarding car to drive, after all it has 'Group A' underpinnings. It's been prepared by the best and should represent cost effective and reliable racing for the coming seasons.Specification Make: FORD Model: RS 1600I Year: 1983 Chassis Number: TBA Registration Number: N/A Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHD Interior Colour: RaceClick here for more details and images
