Timo Sarpaneva (Finnish 1926-2006) for Iittala Five "Arkipelago" Candlestick Holders Textured clear glass with internal bubbles, three of shaped square outline, one triangular and one oval, the latter with partial light blue colouring, all bearing Iittala labels. Bill Davies led a very successful career as an architect, primarily working in his native Wales, with his most celebrated project being the Plas Menai complex situated on the Menai Strait which serves as the National Watersports Centre for Wales and has been awarded Grade II and II* status - it was described as 'arguably the most admired and influential building completed in Wales in the last quarter of the twentieth century’ by Professor Richard Weston*. Bill was also commissioned for architectural work by Cardiff University and indeed served as a Lecturer in Design at the institution, playing a major part in developing the course into one of the highest rated in the United Kingdom.His major inspirations were the celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the leading Finnish designer Alvar Aalto: from this stemmed Bill's enthusiasm for all aspects of mid-century design with the glass of Scandinavia becoming his particular passion, or rather, obsession. A Roman green glass Ungentarium of the candlestick style with a long neck (15mm) and bulbous base (47mm wide). Total height is 131mm. The glass has a lovely patina and has a stunning silvery green iridescence colour. It was excavated in the Phoenician/Sprian area and dates from around the 1st Century AD

A NEPHRITE FIGURE OF GUANYIN, A PLATED CANDLESTICK, AND TWO CONTINENTAL FIGURES, to include a hand-carved nephrite figure of the Chinese goddess of mercy, Guanyin, carrying a lotus bloom, height 18cm (small chip to the back of the bouquet and the base) two late eighteenth/early nineteenth century Derby ceramic shepherdess figures comprising a shepherdess picking flowers, height 21cm, with a red crown and swords mark to the base (slight damage to the hand, firing crack to the upper arm and hat brim, rubs and chips to the flowers) and a seated female figure with her mandolin and lamb, height 18.5cm (clear signs of restoration at the neck, damage to the hand, restoration of the lamb's ear and the headgear, cracks to the paint at various points), and a Barker Ellis plated candlestick with an etched glass shade (scratches and marks to the shade) (4) (Condition Report: See above for itemised conditions)
