Kiffert, appears not to be recorded, however this signature is sometimes seen on large impressive porcelain vases often executed in the style of Sevres. One such example was sold at Christies, London 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art & Ceramics 27th September 2007 (lot 63) for a premium inclusive £18,500. The painted porcelain surmount adorning the present clock is unusually modelled as a carp with a dragon's head. This form comes from the legend of Koi-no-Takinobori which has its roots in ancient China wherein carp swim, against all odds, up a waterfall known as the 'Dragon Gate' at the headwaters of China's Yellow River. The gods are very impressed by the feat, and reward the few successful carp by turning them into powerful dragons. The story symbolizes the virtues of courage, effort, and perseverance, which correspond to the nearly impossible struggle of humans to attain Buddhist enlightenment.Condition Report: Movement appears complete and all original with no visible alteration or significant replacements. Although the mechanism will run and strike it is in dirty/neglected condition hence requires a clean/service. The dial panel is free from visible chips or cracks other than some very slight nibbling around the winding holes. The numerals may have been re-touched/strengthened and there is a slight firing blemish near the VIII numeral otherwise panel is in good albeit slightly dirty condition with minimal wear to the gilding. The side panels are free from visible damage or restoration and have minimal gilt wear however are a little dirty. The dragon fish figural surmount has had some chipping to the whiskers touched-in with red pigment - this will require attention to bring the figure back to fine condition. The securing studs for the platform holding the surmount are presently incomplete hence it can be lifted straight-off the case. The gilding to the brass is original and generally in sound albeit very dirty condition but has some noticeable rubbing to high spots. Both side pieces are generally in good original condition although one has cracking and related small shallow chips to the base part of the ceramic. Otherwise faults are limited to very light gilt wear. The clock has a pendulum but no winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

Nr. IV-693). Tadelloser Zustand. Das Pendel sowie ein Schlüssel vorhanden. A.R. Provenienz: Privatsammlung Mulhouse. Literatur: Michael Shapiro, Monsieur Galle, Bronzier et Doreur, in: The J. (1251196) IMPORTANT HIGH-QUALITY EMPIRE MANTELPIECE CLOCK WITH FIGURAL DESIGN BY CLAUDE GALLE (1759 '''' 1815) Height: 56 cm. Width: 59 cm. Depth: 18.5 cm. Paris, ca. 1810. Bronze; gilt and black patina, green marble. The composition predominantly emphasizes the excellent neo-classical sculpture while the clockwork is subordinated to the overall appearance. The accentuation of black and gold as the dominating colours makes for a very elegant design. A bacchanalian maenad is reclining on a cushion on a black patinated recamier, richly decorated with gilt mountings. The subject of an intoxicated maenad in Bacchus''T entourage was popular and lent itself as inspiration for artistic designs, as in the sculpture on offer for sale here, in conjunction with a clock case. Clodion also designed a bacchanalian nymph in marble on a lounger for a musical clock held at the collection of Prince Napoleon in Brussels. A further comparative example is a similar mantelpiece clock manufactured by Courvoisier & Compagnie, La Chaux-de-Fonds, also with a gilt-bronze by Thomire, Paris (inv. no. IV-693). The attribution to Thomire is based on a design held in the Stockholm National Museum of Fine Arts. Finally, a catalogue from Hôtel Drouot, Paris, (Salle M. Etienne Ader, lot 121) dated 18 June 1848, with illustration of the bronze maker: Claude Galle (1759 - 1815). Not only the design but also the excellent manufacture makes this object one of the most striking examples of the Paris Empire period and can undoubtedly be considered of museum-quality. In pristine condition. Provenance: Private collection, Mulhouse. Literature: M. Shapiro, Monsieur Galle, Bronzier et Doreur, in: The J. Paul Getty Museum Journal, vol. 6/7, 1978/ 1979, pp. 57-74. L. Lot 104

Medieval Figural Bronze.Circa 12th - 14th century AD. Bronze, 1.7 kg. 165mm x 80mm x 40mm. A large piece of medieval sculpture depicting a naked female figure reclining on an arch with acanthus leaf and front scroll. The figure is very similar to many images of mermaids seen in wood and stone carvings of the same period although the piece we have here shows no obvious sign of a tail. The surviving piece was once part of a much larger sculpture or furnishing of a church such as a large candle stick. If the latter, then its likely to be a casualty of the reformation under Henry VIII. This lead to churches and cathedrals being stripped of their wealth and most of the Catholic works of art destroyed. A Derbyshire metal detecting find. Ref: for similar styles see: Molesworth, 1951.
