ALAN CLARKE FOR POOLE POTTERY; a set of nine 'Alignment of the Planets' chargers, dated 2000, limited edition of 500, the set numbered 374/500, diameter of each 40.5cm, all boxed, with a modern tapestry embroidery of the planets, 16 x 95cm, framed and glazed (10).Condition Report: Condition is good, no signs of any chips, cracks, hairlines or wear.
An unusual and spectacular antique Tree of Life crewel work wall hanging - 18th / 19th century, worked in in crewel wool embroidery on a buff-coloured linen ground, decorated with a tree of life festooned with flowers, leaves and birds in polychrome wools, the base of the trunk incorporating the images of various animals amidst the bark, with other animals in buff, pink and red including a dog, a deer and a cat, to the right of the trunk stand two human figures, one with an elaborate animal-skin cloak holding a tethered giraffe and to the left, a moored three-masted discovery / explorer's sailing ship and a circular motif, worked in brown wool with a five letter word, possibly 'Bag...' or 'Bas....', within a broad, conforming border with a repeating design with a tree, flowers and birds, each with an animal at the base of the tree resembling an anteater, approx. 254 x 175cm, the top edge folded and with brass hooks for hanging. * The vendor showed this embroidery to a textiles specialist at the National Trust many years ago, who speculated that it may have been an Afghan piece, dating from the 18th or early 19th century.
A GROUP OF FOUR CHINESE EMBROIDERED SILK PURSES, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY. Comprising: an example in pale blue and indigo, suspending blue tassels, finely embroidered with a bat and butterflies, three embroidered with phoenix and birds amongst flowers in coloured and gold and silver thread, on cream ground with embroidered black borders Overall in good order. Some typical and relatively minor wear overall, majority of embroidery in good order, some very minor discolouration to cream silk.
TWO EARLY 20TH CENTURY INDONESIAN KAUER (SUMATRA, LAMPUNG) EMBROIDERED COTTON JACKETS. From striped burnt orange and indigo cotton, one woven with striped silver thread and embroidered with two vertical panels and applied with mirrored sequins, the other embroidered with gold thread with a cross within a lozenge and applied with sequins, the indigo back panel embroidered with geometric motifs in gilt thread, each stitched with white shells to the collar, the first with red and yellow floral printed cotton lining and the other with cream cotton lining, approx. 30cm long (2)Jackets of this type were made by Kauer women prior to marriage. Overall both jackets are extremely decorative and finely worked. The majority of the applied shells are present. The example with embroidered gilt thread to front - with two holes to the cotton fabric at the back of neckline, there are several areas where the gold thread embroidery is loose/lacking to the front and with losses to sequins, the stitching under the arm is slightly loose. The second with some wear to collar, some tearing to lining, minor staining, some threads pulled, including to the underarm area. Some typical and relatively minor wear overall.
* DANNY FERGUSON RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1925 - 1993), AUTUMN LOCH oil on board, signed, titled label versoframed and under glassimage size 31cm x 31cm, overall size 44cm x 44cm Note: Danny Ferguson was educated at Airdrie Academy from 1936-1942. He was an athletic youngster, playing football for (amongst others) Baillieston Juniors, Bedlay Juniors, Douglas Water Thistle and Blantyre Victoria (taking over the centre-half position from Jock Stein). Later in life, he was a keen snooker player, frequently championing the Glasgow Art Club, and enjoyed Curling. He began studying at GSA in 1941 but his studies were interrupted when he was called up. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1943 and served in the Far East. He re-joined GSA in 1947 and was awarded his diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1949. That same year he won a £30 prize at the Royal Scottish Academy annual competitions. From 1949-1950 he attended the Jordanhill Teacher Training College. He later combined a position as visiting lecturer at GSA with teaching in various Glasgow Schools. He returned to GSA as a full-time lecturer in 1968. In 1958 Ferguson married Margaret Dunn, also a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, in Embroidery and Weaving. They had two children, Anne and David. Probably best known for his landscapes, still lifes and self-portraits. He exhibited regularly, had numerous one-man shows, and his work still hangs in many collections, including the Royal Collection. Danny Ferguson was elected a member of the RSW in 1969, having exhibited there from 1961. He had over 88 works exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute, from 1957. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. Ferguson also served as honorary secretary of the RGI for nine years and was also elected President of the Glasgow Art Club.
A Victorian General Officer's Braided Patrol Jacket. An extremely rare example, attributed to Lieutenant General Sir Robert Grant GCB (1837-1904) . Blue cloth, edged and trimmed with flat black mohair braid. Pointed cuffs and turn-down collar of blue velvet. 5 loops of braid each side, with two olivettes on each loop. Cuffs edged with mohair, traced with Russia braid forming an Austrian knot above and below. Shoulder-straps, edged with narrow braid, bearing Victorian Lieutenant-General’s crown and crossed sword and baton in gold embroidery. Braid ornaments traced with Russia to backseams. Good quilted lining. Ribbon of the Bath to left breast. GC. See Bosleys 1st July 2015 Auction Lot 791. Lieutenant General Sir Robert Grant GCB (1837-1904). He was educated at Harrow and the RMA Woolwich and commissioned into the Royal Engineers. He served in Jamaica and British Honduras and elsewhere, eventually becoming Inspector-General of Fortifications (1891-98). In 1897 he was promoted to Lieut.-General.

A good and extremely rare attributed to Lieutenant General Sir Robert Grant GCB (1837-1904) example of the braided pattern worn by generals holding Staff appointments. Blue cloth with roll collar. Collar, fronts and shoulder-straps edged with black mohair braid. Five loops of black heavy Russia braid each side, forming a figure-of-eight in the centre and trefoils at the ends, fastened with olivettes. Sleeves with heavy Russia Austrian knots. Plain back, with two olivettes at the waist. Ribbon of the Bath to left front. Insignia of a Lieutenant-General in gold embroidery on shoulder straps. Quilted silk lining. Olivettes slightly frayed and one absent, local stitching fault to braid above one cuff and one shoulder mohair pearl button absent, minor old moth ... A GEORGE I WALNUT STOOL CIRCA 1730 With a green velvet and embroidered drop-in seat 46cm high, 47cm wide, 46cm deep Please note, this seat is embroidered and not embossed, as mentioned in the printed catalogue. Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.The drop in seat is centred with an 18th century linen embroidered panel within a green velvet border. The, probably silk, embroidery thread is extensively worn and the dark thread probably corroded, with some holes and other marks/discolouration, now revealing the underlying ink pattern markings.The frame of the drop in seat has not entirely been inspected as it is upholstered, some or all wood stretchers are variously replaced, there is some evidence of old worm.A foot side section is missing to one foot. Some later staining. The turned stretchers appear to have been re-fixed/repaired into the legs, though it is not clear due to some later staining.Please see all the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition. A pair of hand-embroidered cotton curtains by Chelsea Textiles, 20th century, in Pastel Vine 'Sea, Mist & Sand' design, worked in pale silks with crewelwork-style trailing vine embroidery to a cream ground, lined in Chelsea Textiles small green check fabric, interlined and weighted,each drop 210cm long95cm wide at the pleated edge (2)Condition ReportCommissioned from Chelsea Textiles by the vendor. Bottom width per length approximately 207cm. Total width of top pleated edge for the pair approximately 190cm. Fabric patterns F143/B (made to order) and the equivalent of FC1004 (exact pattern is discontinued but this is the replacement). Overall the curtains are in excellent condition and barely used. No obvious marks, holes, stitching losses, etc.

Group of Victorian / Edwardian babies white cotton clothing including open-back vests, christening gowns and dresses with lace, embroidery, white-work, Broderie Anglaise trims. Plus a later hand-smocked dress, lilac dress and a dolly nightie. Also some similar household pinafore aprons and waste-tied aprons. These items are not soiled. Overall they are good to very good. Some of the babies nighties have discolouration at the neck.The net and lace dress is dull a wash may refresh . The lilac dress is stained .

A mid 1910s dress in a grey-mauve grosgrain with bullion embroidered net modesty panel and padded bullion embroidery trim and a C1900 two piece dress made from a jacquard boiled wool with lace and silk ribbon trim (2) 10s dress is structurally sound with some colour variation, staining to decorative buttons and a hole in net at neck seam Boiled wool set has some staining and general wear, there is a hole on the back of the bodice and a smaller one lower down plus some nibble in the silk cummerbund. There are some holes in the back of the skirt

Chinese Lady's Robe Qing Dynasty Late 19th Century in a rich cobalt blue damask with pink cuffs and ivory and pink borders. The ivory borders are beautifully embroidered with cranes and butterflies both symbolising longevity, the Chinese for butterfly (die) is a homonym for ‘octogenarian”. The borders are scattered with plum blossom symbolising resilience and hope. These symbols are also found on the cuffs along with a Skirt (qun), Qing Dynasty, late 19th Century in a cobalt blue silk skirt with exquisitely embroidered panels and borders. The panels feature the auspicious peacock symbolising beauty wealth and power surrounded by plum blossom (resilience) and nightingales (happiness and virtue).The borders are packed with symbols good fortune and strength (koi carp), longevity and prosperity (gourds) interspersed with foliage. Condition issues have been photographed so please study these images carefully. A zip front cardigan or jacket by British designer Anne Fewlass made from black wool with a broken chevron stripe in apricot, air force blue and moss green chenille. The design is lightly shaped to the waist with gigot sleeves which are slashed down the centre side to reveal inserts of black chenille knit with a vertical band of stripes in apricot, air force blue and moss green to match the broken chevron. The tight, lower part of the gigot sleeve is knitted in a checkerboard effect to match the cardigan sides. Fewlass has used a variety of machine knitted stitches in this complex design.The V&A holds a jacket in a very similar style with a different colourway and pattern, they write "Annie Fewlass studied fashion and textiles at Birmingham/ Leicester College od Art. She often uses machine knitting as a base for various hand techniques such as crochet, beading, embroidery and felting'. Size S. in very good condition commensurate with age and wear.

A 19th century alphabet sampler with embroidery in silk, cotton and metal threads on a linen ground. The alphabet, in upper case is repeated in rows with the Z in reverse. There are seemingly random letters, numbers and roman numerals and it is possible that there is a meaning to what is embroidered. About half way down is a row of tiny birds and flowers and hearts too feature in the design. An 18th/ 19th century verse sampler with silk embroidery on a linen ground. the verse is a quote from Joseph Addison, 1672-1719 "There is but one way of fortifying the soul against all gloomy presages and terrors of mind, and that is by securing to ourselves the friendship and protection of the being who disposes of events, and governs futurity" . "Benedicta Brown- Aged 10 years" is embroidered below the verse with potted flowers, birds and animals in between. Silver caviar jar made in the form of a rustic basket with a lid, imitating relief weaving of bast. The jar is decorated with a trompe l`oeil, executed in the form of a woven napkin tied with a woven rope. The napkin is decorated with a relief geometric pattern imitating Russian-style embroidery on fabric. The edges of the napkin are decorated with fringe. Silver, stamping, embossing, chasing, engraving. Russian Empire, Moscow. 1892. Hallmarks: master`s mark in the form of the letters GL in a square shield, assay mark in the form of a fraction, in the numerator of which are the letters A.S, and in the denominator the year of assaying - 1892; silver sample - 84 in a square shield; an indicator of the Moscow Assay Chamber in the form of an image of St. George the Victorious on a horse (oriented to the left) in a figured shield.
