Exceptional and masterful oil on panel, possibly the most important and best preserved Madonna and Child of the five known compositions by this author. Dimensions only panel without frame 60 x 39 cm. This masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, executed in oil on panel, represents the Virgin Mary in an intimate scene with the Child Jesus, characterized by its profound religious symbolism and exceptional technical handling. The Virgin, dressed in a rich red tunic and wrapped in a dark blue cloak, holds the Child with maternal delicacy while he gently caresses her. The architectural background, with its arches and classical structures, suggests a direct influence of Renaissance architecture, probably inspired by the great masters of the time. The choice of oil on panel as a support shows a meticulous technique, allowing a vibrant play of light and shadow, and a detailed representation of textures, from the soft fabrics to the infant's skin.

PIETER JOHANNES VAN REYSCHOOT (FLEMISH 1702-1770) PORTRAIT OF JOHN LEGH, HALF-LENGTH, IN A BLACK COAT, WHITE STOCK AND BROWN CLOAK Oil on canvas, feigned oval Signed (lower left) 74 x 62cm (29 x 24¼ in.) Provenance: Probably commissioned by the sitter for Adlington Hall, and thence by descent John Legh (1668- 1739) was the son of Colonel Thomas Legh (1644-1691) and Johanna Maynard (unknown- 1700). He was a member of Parliament for Bodmin in Cornwall between 1715-1722. John married Lady Isabella Robartes, the grand-daughter of John Robartes 1st Earl of Radnor (first creation) and daughter of Robert Robartes, Viscount Bodmin and Sarah Bodville, later Countess of Radnor. John is credited for commissioning the the famed Aglington Organ in the Great Hall. Both Lady Isabella and her husband were passionate about music, and it is probable that the organ was a gift to her shortly after they arrived in Adlington.
