If you press down on the red right hand corner there is some movement. The white side locking mechanism works fine, the red side does not want to work but can be forced to work by pulling up the lever, though it can unlock if the board is knocked.

A Staunton pattern boxwood and ebony chess set - mid-20th century, the kings 7.4cm high, the pawns 3.6cm high, in a pine box; also containing a letter from the owner regarding provenance.* Complete. The black king has a chip to the cross finial (appears to be a factory fault, as it is under the varnish). One white pawn has a small shrinkage split to the base. A little wear to ebonised finish to the black knights. No other faults. The box has some losses to the edges of the sliding lid.
