Lot 420

An important Caughley centrepiece and stand from the Marquess of Donegal service, circa 1793, the centre decorated with a crowned D within a yellow, blue, gilt and pink banded rim, the broad foliate border reserved with panels of classical ladies painted en grisaille, one panel painted with the family crest, the dish marked CHAMBERLAIN, 38cm wide Provenance: Geoffrey Godden Literature: Geoffrey Godden, Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain, Barrie & Jenkins, 1982, ill. P.49, pl. 23 for a dessert dish, p. 50, pl. 24 for other pieces from the service including the present lot The invoice for this service is dated the 18 September 1793. It is a harlequin set as borders are of different designs, the centre dishes cost £8 8 shillings. The dish itself has slight rubbing to the gilding and a small restored chip to the rim. The stand has a foot missing and there is a crack to the side. Small amount of discolouration to a part of the base.

A Caughley part dessert service, circa 1780 – 85, painted, possibly by Thomas Pardoe after Paul Sandby, in blue monochrome with river landscapes and ruined buildings, within broad borders of gilt dots and interlaced oval band rims, comprising a large fluted dish, a pair of kidney-shaped dishes and a plate, the dish 34cm wide (4) Rubbing to the gilding, one of kidney shaped  dishes has slight chips to the rim. Tiny chip to the gilding on the larger dish.

There are a couple of nibbles to the underside rim of the cover on the teapot and a further smaller nibble to the tip of the spout.Both canister covers have small chips. The teapot stand has some loss of glaze to one side.Cream jug - hairline near handle. Nibbles around foot rim and small chip to spout. The glaze has some defects from firingSucrier has minor nibbles to the underside rim of the cover.One tea bowl has a descending hairline.A few pieces have minor gilt wear.

A rare Caughley porcelain 'Rose' sauceboat, circa 1776-80, of fluted low oval form, painted in underglaze blue with the central open flower with a single branch and foliage to either side, the interior with a cell diaper upper border, C with serif mark, 7cm high, 14cm long (crack around upper terminus of handle)Provenance: Private collection, purchased prior to 1975.Condition:There is a crack around the upper terminus of the handle, but it has not been broken off. Otherwise condition is good, there are a couple of minute edge knocks around the foot rim and a few minute glaze nibbles around the tip of the spout. No other damages or repairs.

Ex. Godden Reference Collection.Condition:Rubbing and some minute nicks to the gilding on the upper rim. Two faint hairlines or crazing lines to the upper portion of the handle. There is some gilt loss to the foliage on either side of the portrait panel. Old remnants of sellotape residue to the body.

Purchased at Halls on 28th April, 2010, lot 81.Condition:There is a firing crack/open fissure about the lower terminal of the handle and a slight further firing fissure below the spout. The interior rim also has a small indent, which has been glazed and painted over. There are no damages or restorations, all of the defects are manufacturing ones.

A Caughley 'Fisherman' or 'Pleasure Boat' teapot and covercirca 1785-90of globular form with a ridged handle, transfer-printed in underglaze blue with the main pattern below an associated cell diaper and spearhead border, unmarked, 15.5cm highCondition:Hairline and a chip to the spout. Small chip to the cover's rim and a further smaller chip to the underside of the cover. Scratches and glaze pitting to the exterior of the teapot.

A small group of Caughley, circa 1782-1794, comprising two reinforced beakers or tea bowls in the 'Temple' pattern, unmarked, 6cm high; a teacup, also in the 'Temple' pattern, unmarked; together with 'Pagoda' wares, comprising a slop basin, Sx mark, 15cm diameter, two coffee cups, two tea bowls and two saucers; a 'Fenced Garden' tea bowl and saucer, unmarked and a fluted teabowl and saucer, decorated in cobalt gilt (14) Condition:Fenced tea bowl and saucer- minor gilt wear to tea bowl. Firing cracks to the underside of the saucer. Reinforced tea bowls - one with some gilt wear to rim. One smaller Fluted tea bowl originally had a gilt rim and this now almost completely gone, the other is just heavily rubbed. Gilt and blue tea bowl and saucer - hairline to tea bowl, minor gilt wear to the lobed rim. Saucer with chips to the foot rim.  Slop bowl - gilding to rim 90% rubbed. Temple teacup with star crack to foot and crack to interior. No other damages or repairs.

This runs in an almost straight line and includes overpainting to the flowers and also colour matching to the underside. The bowl does ring when tapped.
