The stained beech case carved with a fox walking along a craggy and foliate base, the dial flanked with carved tree trunks and oak leaves, and surmounted by a carved cuckoo on a nest. Carved bone hands, white Roman numerals (I missing). The movement marked "A. Fleig"? and striking on a gong (movement needs cleaning, one bellow A/F, chip to cuckoo's wing and other small losses to carved case). 59cm in height x 46cms approx.

Pasta is considered one of the greatest 19th century opera divas of the 19th century, not dissimilar to Maria Callas in the 20th century. She made her first appearance in Milan in 1815, and performed in numerous roles in operas by Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini (many of which were created for her) to great acclaim. After hearing her in the role of Telemachus in Cimarosa’s Penelope, William Hazlitt wrote ‘There is a natural eloquence about her singing which we felt, and therefore understand ... her voice is good, her action is good; she has a handsome face, and very handsome legs’. -1
