Many attempts were made to deprive Hercules of the oxen, notably by Cacus, a giant who lived in a cave on Mt. Aventius. Cacus stole some of the cattle and attempted to conceal their traces by dragging them backwards by their tails into the cave. As the other cattle passed the cave, those within started to bellow and were thus discovered, whereupon Cacus was slain by Hercules.
Age: Qing dynasty Description: Beautifully carved Chinese overlay Bejing / Peking glass moon-shaped snuff bottle. An archaistic dragon-headed character in cobalt blue on milky opaque white ground. Coral stopper. Size: 2 1/2", 6.3 cm. Provenance: From a French homeCondition: The bottle is in overall good condition commensurate with age. There is one flea bite to the edge of the neck. There is residue and dirt in the mouth and interior of the bottle. The blue overall may have some slight fritted edges but no visible chips or losses. The spoon is missing bellow the stopper. He represented one of the few Catholic aristocratic families who survived Cromwellian deportation to Connaught. Mount Bellow was an architecturally significant house with a fine library of books; the former destroyed, the latter dispersed.

A copper-alloy set comprising of a long linked chain; a large cross with crown to the top, insert red and transparent cut glass stones, a central painted image of Christ on a blue background with outspread hands and skull bellow feet; inscription to the reverse: 'Donata de Const. C. Lupescu'; hallmarks 'JV' and standing male(?) 170 grams, chain: 146cm, cross: 16cm (57 1/2"). Property of an Austrian gentleman; acquired before 1990. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
BELLOW SAUL: (1915-2005) Canadian-American Writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1976, Pulitzer Prize winner, 1976. D.S., Saul Bellow, two pages, 4to, New York, 19th August 1990. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, being a Memorandum of Agreement with Svjetlost Publishers, entered into with Bellow for the exclusive licence to translate into Serbo Croat his work Seize The Day, stating, in part, 'An advance of one thousand five hundred dollars ($1500) payable on signature of this agreement on account of a royalty of seven per cent (7%) of the retail price on every copy printed for a complete print run of five thousand (5000) copies printed.' Signed by Bellow in black fountain pen ink to the conclusion and also countersigned on behalf of the publisher. With a slight tear and two pin holes to the upper right corner, and light age wear. G

A Victorian Etruscan style turquoise set circular pendant having central diamond, with trailing fringe bellow, and having glazed hair compartment to rear, 2.5cm diameter. Condition Report: Metal not tested for gold. 7 x Turquoise discoloured - one of which also has a small chip. Some surface discolouration and scratching to rear. One tassle has been repaired.

Peepshow. [The Thames Tunnel, published by T.C. Brandon], n.p., circa 1845, double-decker peepshow, with four hand-coloured engraved divisions, three showing boats on the River Thames (with imprint of J.T. Wood, 33 Holywell Street, Strand) and pedestrians in the Tunnel below, and back-scene showing Victoria and Albert on a ceremonial barge at Wapping and pedestrians in the Tunnel below, latter with creased and slightly frayed folding flap to upper edge, adhesive tape repair to fold of flap on verso and to lower bellow attachment to back board on one side, front board with the engraving of Victoria and Albert repeated, and with three circular peepholes, overall somewhat dusty and toned, 16 x 17cm (6.25 x 6.75ins), extending 62cm (24.5ins) See Gestetner Collection 240 for a peepshow featuring Brandon's engraving of the royal visit on 26th July 1843. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are shown about to disembark from a ceremonial barge at Wapping, in front of crowds on the quay. A 19th century Westmorland breezer, brass and wood. Length 66 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The mechanism appears to operate as it should. All brasswork is original and present. It is all dirty. The spout has numerous old dents and marks. It is blackened at the end. It is a little loose in the housing. The mahogany bellow s surround has two old hairline fractures but is in generally good order as is the mahogany board on which everything sits. A good clean is in order.
A rosewood framed squeezebox, late 19th CenturyForty eight button squeezebox with fretwork design with paper label, bellows, housed in a leatherette case. CONDITION REPORT: Buttons are metal. Strap on the left hand side missing. Two small repairs on the bellow heads. No rips or tears in bellows. Otherwise only general wear. Fret work good. Good condition.
Lachenal and Company patent concertina, having mahogany pierced end panels and ivory buttons, in original fitted case. (B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Losses and wear around screw heads, particularly to one end, wear around finger buttons, one leather hand strap is broken. Bellow appear good, box is very scuffed and worn generally, and lacking handle. All notes seem to work.
A rare early 19th century Black Forest automata and organ longcase clock, the walnut and parcel gilt hood surmounted by a royal blue armorial crest over a neo-classical oil depicting the rescue of a storm-stranded maiden and enclosing the fusee movement and cylinder which operates the bellows to play eight songs, the pair of chirping and turning yellow birds with opening beaks back-set by an oil depicting a Mediterranean villa, the enamelled clock face with Roman numerals, within an associated mahogany case, h. 228 cm, w. 70 cm, d. 45 cm CONDITION REPORT: Auctioneers highly recommend viewing for this lot. Interior/movement requiring attention- not operating fully (see video for example of which parts currently operate). Bellow arm broken. Automaton casing loose. Some flute tops missing. Some losses to enamelling on face. One bird deficient of leg. Interior case later painted white. Some foxing/discolouration to both oils. Interior requires cleaning. Movement and bellows deficient of guts/string. Split to cylinder. Later block supporting movement. Bubbles in glass door. Shrinkage to top of hood. Veneer to case lifting slightly in one place (minor). Case with a later lock. Case generally good and commensurate with age. Sold with the pendulum and three weights.
