*Alan Caiger-Smith (1930-2020) Genii Cucullati or The Hooded Spiritssigned and inscribed on backboard 'A.Caiger-Smith, King's College, Cambridge', watercolour33 x 44.5cmProvenance: Private collection, Suffolk.In 1949, Caiger-Smith took up a scholarship at King’s College, Cambridge, to study history, switching to English. He continued to draw and paint whilst studying and sold his work. The 'Genii Cucullati' is a carving displayed at Housesteads Roman Fort, on the Hadrian's Wall and depicts cloaked figures from the early 3rd century. It is unclear of their significance, but possibly fertility figures, often seen in Romano-Celtic sculpture from this time.
