Alan Caiger-Smith (1930-2020) at Aldermaston Pottery tin-glazed earthenware dinner service, to include pieces by Alan Caiger-Smith and David Tipler amongst other potters, consisting of: tureens with covers, egg cups, plates, bowls, storage jar etc All with signs of overall wear and use. Some glaze faults and crazing due to firing. Several pieces have chips, small losses and some with cracks. Some sound dull when tapped but with no visible damage. A large Aldermaston pottery red lustre bowl, tin-glazed earthenware decorated in a red and gold lustre abstract design, various marks to base including artist monogram and symbol for 1974, overall condition is good with no sign of damage or restoration, 47.5 cm diameterQTY: (1)NOTE:Alan Caiger-Smith (1930-2020), studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and King's College, Cambridge. He trained pottery at the Central School of Art & Design in 1954 under Dora Billington.Caiger-Smith established the Aldermaston Pottery in West Berkshire in 1955. The pottery was a cooperative workshop of about seven potters making functional and domestic ware and tiles. Caiger-Smith revived and perfected tin glaze and painting on red earthenware clay. A technique adopted during the medieval Islamic period and also much later by the likes of William De Morgan, Pilkington's Royal Lancaster and others. The factory ceased production when it was sold in 2006.
