TEA TROUBLES. TOWNSEND ACTS. Manuscript Document signed by more than 60 townspeople including both men and women of Newburyport, Massachusetts, agreeing to refuse to sell, buy or consume Bohea or Indian Tea 'until the Revenue Acts so justly complain'd of are repealed,' 2 pp, 315 x 192 mm, the Town House, Newbury Port, April 6, 1770, worn, panel detached at lower fold, with two large chips along lower edge/corner, with some text loss. Provenance: Sold Merwin Clayton, New York, Rare Books, Broadsides, Manuscripts relating to American History, December 5, 1912, lot 449; William 'Bill' McMillen (historian, d.2022); by descent. RARE MANUSCRIPT AGREEMENT REFUSING TO TRADE IN INDIA TEA IN PROTEST OF THE TOWNSEND ACTS ON THE HEELS OF THE BOSTON MASSACRE. Throughout the end of 1769 and the beginning of 1770 tensions were running high throughout Boston and the surrounding towns, including Newburyport. With non-importation agreements still in place in response to the unjust Townsend Acts, conflicts between American colonists and the British soldiers stationed in Boston proliferated, culminating in the Boston Massacre, March 5, 1770, when British soldiers fired on the protesting American colonists killing 5 people. In nearby Newburyport ('Newbury Port'), on March 23, inhabitants voted that the agreement on the non-importation of goods should be continued in force. When a new wagonload of tea arrived in town on April 3rd, a new agreement was signed on April 6th by those who were determined not to buy, sell, or use India tea of any kind whatsoever, the present document. They also agreed to submit the names of those who had violated the non-importation agreement, or refused to sign 'to the intent that they may be known & avoided as ye Pests of society & enemies of ye Country & that such measures may be taken with them as ye Town shall think proper.' A rare manuscript survival of the build-up to the American Revolution, including a number of female inhabitants voicing their resistance.
