ZENGER IMPRINT, 1735. TENNENT, GILBERT. 1703-1764. The Espousals, or A Passionate Perswasive to a Marraige with the Lamb of God ... A Sermon upon Gen 24 49. Preached at N. Brunswick, June the 22nd, 1735. New York: Printed by J. Peter Zenger, 1735. 4to (153 x 95 mm). Disbound, title page and 2nd leaf detached, some chipping to edges of leaves; housed in folded vellum wrapper. Provenance: Robertus Woodward (ink inscription, 1751). FIRST EDITION OF 'ONE OF THE GREAT SERMONS IN THE EARLY AMERICAN CHURCH,' PRINTED BY JOHN PETER ZENGER IN THE YEAR OF HIS GREAT TRIAL, '... one of the initial sermons of the Great Awakening' (Old, Holy Communion in the Piety of the Reformed Church, 2020, p 646). Zenger was arrested in 1734 for printing libelous material in his New-York Weekly Journal, and was imprisoned for 7 months until his trial in August 1735. The 'libel' was critical statements of colonial governor William Cosby, and his case became a landmark of American freedom of the press. His lawyer, Andrew Hamilton, took his case directly to the jury, arguing that truth, or true statements, even if defamatory, could not be considered libelous. The jury's decision to support Zenger, despite the judge's admonitions, asserted the right of ordinary people to interpret human law, and echoed the religious assertions of the revivalists in putting individual communion with God above the authority of the church. VERY RARE, we trace no copy of this edition at auction in the 20th-century. Evans 3965.
