CAMPBELL (ROY) Archive of autograph and printed material relating to South African poet, Roy Campbell (1901-1957), much relating to the 1950 edition of Adamastor, comprising: i) Four autograph manuscript poems, 'The Gum Trees' (signed 'Roy Campbell'), 'Choosing a Mast', 'Pomegranates', and 'Luis de Camoes' (with pencilled annotation 'Roy Campbell given to Patric Dickinson in 1947. Holograph of the author'), 7 pages, in ink on lined and squared paper, dust-staining, discolouration and marks, some small holes, rust stains, the last two mentioned in cardboard mounts, the rest in paper sleeves from dealer Chas. J. Sawyer Ltd., Grafton Street, London, 300 x 192mm. and smaller, [n.d.]; ii) Autograph illustrated letter signed ('Roy Campbell'), to Miss Facey of Faber's, giving an amusing critique of the artist's attempt at drawing a sailboat ('...It is only the perversity of the sail that is also flying a mile out, in the wrong direction, that keeps this little man from being capsized and sunk at once – as he deserves to be...'), including several pen and ink drawings of sailboats and horses to illustrate his point, 4 pages, in ink on lined paper, dust-staining and discolouration, rust stains, 270 x 210mm., [n.p., n.d.]; iii) Fourteen illustrations by Roy Campbell, thirteen for the Cape Town edition of Adamastor: 'Dedication (To Mary Campbell)', p.10; 'St.Peter of the Three Canals (The Fisher's Prayer)', p.28; 'The Making of a Poet' (2), p.36; 'To a pet Cobra', p.44; 'Tristan da Cunha (3), p.66; 'Horses on the Camargue' (2), p.78; 'Estocade', p.84; two extra images for 'Sonnet' (not published); one for Taurine Provence: 'Ad Deo Solo Invicto Mithrae', p.79, some captioned on reverse, some signed ('Roy Campbell'), pen and ink and pencil, dust-staining and marks, 123 x 180mm. and smaller, [n.d.]; with autograph letter to Mr Koston enclosing the illustrations and making various amendments ('...I enclose also a Pet Cobra. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
