A Very Rare French .600 (20-Bore) Flintlock Silver-Mounted Rifled Carbine By Boutet, Directeur Artiste, Manuf ie A Versailles, No. 267, Paris Silver Marks For 1798-1809 Including The Grosse Garantie Poinçon, Maker's Mark JM Between A Star And A Bunch Of Grapes With swamped part octagonal sighted polygroove rifled barrel (light rust patination) with repeated designs of punched and gilt foliate decoration at the muzzle and breech, the latter signed in script over both sides and struck on the top flats with indistinct gold-lined marks (four corroded) of Daniel Bouyssavy, and beneath the breech with a further mark of Bouyssavy, manufactory mark of Denis Brouilly and 'Manu Vlles', folding leaf back-sights (one missing), tang engraved with an animal (worn) and symmetrical foliate scrolls, border engraved rounded lock (action defective at half cock) signed 'BOUTET Directeur Artiste' and decorated with foliage, foliate engraved cock (repaired) and steel, safety-stud, gold-lined pan and roller, figured full-stock (some old bruising, repaired on one side at the central barrel-bolt escutcheon) finely chequered at the fore-end and grip, the latter carved in relief beneath with a winged monster's mask, the cheek-piece carved with a flower-head, mounts cast and chased in relief in the neo-classical taste with trophies of arms involving Medusa heads and comprising butt-plate tang, trigger-guard with the head of Mars in splendour on the bow, and rear ramrod-pipe, the last with ramrod-entry formed as a fasces, two other ramrod-pipes en suite, side-nails centred respectively on foliage and griffin supporters, adjustable set trigger, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, and later wooden ramrod (old wear overall) 70.3 cm. barrel Footnotes: Nicolas-Noël Boutet (1761-1833) is considered to be one of the greatest recorded gunmakers. From 1793 to 1818 he was artistic director of the Manufacture Nationale de Versailles were he was responsible for the production of some of the finest luxury and presentation arms ever made. Buyers' Premium and Charges

27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
