American Horseman's Saber, Likely Newburyport, Massachusetts, c. 1770. Brass hilt, counter-guard with down turned quillon and two slots, two branches joining a tapering knuckle bow and deeply chased lion's head pommel, spiral carved walnut grip with thin brass ribbon wrapping, the top of the counter-guard engraved 'ZC'; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and three narrow fullers, trace of bluing on the upper third of the blade; brown leather scabbard with sheet brass tip and throat. Blade lg. 33, overall lg. 38 1/2 in. Condition: Brass toned to deep yellow/green, hilt has a little movement on the blade tang; blade has scattered spots and areas of surface oxidation; scabbard is sound and has alligatoring especially on the lower half.
