This part of my collection is peripheral. Until I visited my son Denzil and his family in Hong Kong in 2005, travelling via Vietnam, I had never been to the Far East, only as far as Thailand, which I hated. The few things I have - from Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and Borneo - were given to me, and mean nothing to me. I bought a few Chinese and Japanese embroideries because I liked them. A important kingwood, padouk, mahogany and rosewood writing cabinet, circa 1880. Attributed to Gabriel Viardot (1830-1906). in the Japanese taste, inlaid and banded with mother of pearl, ebony and strung in brass, the pagoda roof hung with bells and with stylised marlins to the corners, above three recesses with mother of pearl inlaid draweres flanked by crouching winged dragons looking down on younger dragons, above three cupboard doors divided by figures of Oriental men and flanked by larger outer cupboards, the central lower section with a drawer and fall front with entwined banding and central mother of pearl birds and flowering vase above a bell dated '1860', above a pair of cupboard doors enclosing sliding trays, the fall front revealing a central mirror panel of recess with chequer floor and sliding out to reveal twelve drawers, flanked by apertures and six burrwood drawers, the lower side sections comprising a cupboard door modelled as four dummy drawers above three drawers with two outer cupboard cupboard doors with applied carved birds and seated figures, the whole raised on a plinth base with grotesque mask feet. 275cm wide, 297cm high, 48cm deep . Gabriel Viardot is largely remembered for his particular version of Asian style furniture, and was advertised as créateur des meubles dans le genre chinois et japonais. He exhibited widely, including at Crystal Palace in 1851, and was both participant and jury member for the 1867, 1878 and 1889 International Exhibitions in Paris. His major success was at the 1889 Parise Exposition Universelle where the firm was awarded a gold medal. The cabinet is typical of pieces by Gabriel Viardot. Beginning his career as a wood carver, he took over the family firm from his father Charles in 1861. By 1870 he specialized in exotic furniture influenced by Chinese and Vietnamese styles, Vietnam being one of France's most important colonies. In 1860, he was located at 5, rue du Grand-Chantier, later moving to several locations including 36, rue Rambuteau where objects d'art et de fantaisie were sold and finally to 36, rue Amelot where he stayed until the end of the century. Around 1885 he employed about 100 men.

Army L.S. & G.C., E.II.R., 2nd issue, Australia (5610 A. J. Hill) nearly extremely fine £70-90 Army L.S. & G.C. Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 20 December 1967. Commonwealth of Australia Meritorious Service Medal Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 29 October 1970. Andrew John Hill was born in Perth, Western Australia on 23 July 1929. By occupation a Farm Worker, he enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 20 February 1948, giving his father's address as Mr. Reginald Clifford Hill, the Schoolhouse, Bendering, Western Australia. Initially he was posted to the 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Kapooka, and then to the Signals School, Balcombe. In October 1948 he was transferred to the 1st Line Construction Project Squadron and was promoted to Linesman in March 1949 and Corporal in March 1950. He transferred to the School of Signals in October 1952, the 4th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in December 1952, and then the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in July 1953. On 21 March 1954 he embarked on the New Australia at Brisbane, arriving at Pusan, Korea, on 31 March, remaining there until 5 July 1954 when he embarked for Japan. He returned to Korea on 29 July and remained there until 9 November 1954. Returning home aboard the New Australia, he was then posted to the 17th National Service Training Battalion at Ingleburn. In July 1957, he was posted to 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment as Orderly, and embarked at Sydney for Penang in September for service in the Malayan Emergency. He was attached to the 1st RAR in October and November 1959 and enplaned at Singapore for Perth on 25 November. He was transferred to 1st RAR in October 1960 and was posted to Singapore. He joined the 2nd RAR in November 1961 at Malacca and returned to Australia in October 1962. Hill was promoted to Corporal in March 1964 and Sergeant Quartermaster in March 1965. He then served in Vietnam, arriving at Saigon on 9 June 1965 for operations in Phouc Tuy and Bien Hoa Provinces in South Vietnam before returning to Australia on 11 June 1966, being promoted to Staff Sergeant in July. He served for a second tour in Vietnam from 17 March 1968 to 4 February 1969. He then went to Kuala Lumpur for duty with Far East Land Forces (FARELF), being promoted to W.O. II in August 1970. In September 1972 he was on training in Lae, Papua New Guinea and was then transferred to the 42nd Royal Queensland Regiment in December 1973. Warrant Officer Hill was discharged on 20 April 1979 with over 31 years of service. In addition to the awards of the Australian Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and Australian Meritorious Service Medal, Andrew John Hill was awarded the United Nations Medal for Korea, the General Service Medal with clasp 'Malaya', the Vietnam Medal and the South Vietnam Campaign Medal, the United States Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Infantry Combat Badge. .

Recommendation states, ‘Lt Col Malet has been Head of the Army Section of the Foreign Liaison Section since November 1983. His duties cover maintaining a close liaison with all the foreign MilitaryAttaches in London, staffing their many requests for information, hosting representational functions, arranging and escorting Attache group visits to UK and BAOR Military establishments, coordinating programmes for foreign military visitors and planning, programme and escorting CGS’s inbound COS visitors. ...... Dealing with the representatives of foreign countries provides unlimited scope for disaster but he has always foreseen and therefore averted problems. He is held in extremely high regard by all the foreign representatives who value his friendship, direction and help. ....’ greville John Wyndham Malet was born on 6 December 1939, the son of Captain John Wyndham Malet (1910-40) and June Rosalind nee Broadley, and was a scion of the Malet Baronets. He was educated at Harrow and in July 1958, after serving in the ranks for 242 days, he gained a commission in the 10th Hussars. Following the regiment’s amalgamation with the 11th Hussars in 1969, he continued to serve with the Royal Hussars. He was appointed G.S.O.2 (Author) at the R.A.C. Tactical School, December 1971-January 1974 and held the rank of Acting-Major from December 1971 until promoted to that rank in December 1972. In July 1980 he attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel; was awarded the O.B.E. in 1987 and was placed on Retired Pay in February 1990. He married in 1972, the Hon. Margaret Cherry Wigram, eldest daughter of the 2nd Baron Wigram, with whom he had two children. Latterly living at the Walled House, Hathertop, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, he died on 5 September 2004. william Malet, the founder of the Malet family in England, was a companion of William the Conqueror at Hastings and was related by marriage to Rollo, 1st Duke of Normandy. S/D. Note; Hamilton agreed that this anti-Vietnam war protest image be issued in a large run of 5000 impressions so that it may be widely viewed. Vietnam 1964 (57011 R. A. Grey) extremely fine £300-400 The recipients South Vietnam Medal 1964 was sold by D.N.W. 27 June 2007, lot 118. D.S.O. London Gazette 21 December 1971; Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 16 December 1971. M.I.D. London Gazette 13 December 1966. Ronald Alwyn Grey was born in Perth, Western Australia on 2 July 1930. Entering the Australian Army with the service number 57011, he served in the Korea War as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, 13 June-23 July 1952 and 14 August 1952-12 June 1953. In 1962 he attended the Staff College at Camberley. As a Major in the Army Service Corps he served in the Borneo confrontation and was mentioned in despatches. During the Vietnam War he was a Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in Phuc Tuy Province, February 1970-March 1971, for which services he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. In 1973 he was appointed Australian Army Representative in Australia House, The Strand, London. He retired from the Australian Army as a Major-General. In 1988 Major-General Grey was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive review of the rescue services in New South Wales. The recommendations of the study were implemented by the N.S.W. Government in 1989. The medal was a gift to the recipient who received two named examples.

July 1905 to June 1907, including street scenes, views, temples, festivals, arrivals and departures of military troops (French, German, Japanese, Chinese, British & American), relating to Tientsin, Tonkin, Kyoto, Yokohama, Nara, Osaka, Shimonoseki, plus a few of Tokyo, Ceylon, Aden, etc., many identified and dated in pencil in French to versos, some images referring to the departure of General Kamio and also General Lefevre, and one showing a train with the distant figure of Miss Roosevelt [President Roosevelt's daughter] e -route to Tonkin, all loose, approx. 9 x 12 cm. The identity of the French photographer is not evident. He or she was presumably working in and/or travelling in French Indochina and nearby territories during this period. (approx. 280)
