Born in Friedrichstadt, Courland, he graduated from the Stieglitz School of Technical Drawing, St Petersburg, in 1899, followed by further study on a scholarship to France, Germany and Italy before joining the Imperial Porcelain Factory in 1905, taking charge of the artistic workshops the following year. One of the few artists to remain through the revolution, he was made head of the painting workshops, becoming director of the factory in 1930, but falling foul of Stalin’s regime in about 1936 he seems to disappear from the scene and the date of his death remains uncertain.Vilde's original design is held by the Museum of the Imperial Porcelain Factory (State Hermitage, St Petersburg, MZ-G-102) and illustrated in 'Circling the Square, Avant-Garde Porcelain from Revolutionary Russia', Tamara Kudryavtseva, London, 2004, p.160.

Masonic interest, a Sunderland lustre pottery jug decorated with Masonic devices including compass, scales, torches, beehive, sun, moon, trowel, bell etc. personalised 'Hendray Watson Arbuthnet', and with crest 'Smiths Arms' having motto ;By Hammar and Hand all Arts do Stand', 20cm tall. There is a glaze error with frits and crazing to the body. There is wear to the handle. There are no obvious signs of restoration with stains and marks to the interior.

An Australian silver caddy spoon. John Harris (Harris & Son), Perth (Western Australia), Mid 20th century. Stamped 925, the parcel gilt terminal decorated with three flowers of Geraldton Wax, the handle engraved to reverse with name of the botanical species, 12.7cm long, in fitted case. Together with a group of British silver items, comprising: two George III Fiddle pattern serving spoons, London, 1809, Thomas Wilkes Barker, engraved with initial and crest to terminal, 22cm long; a small Victorian cream jug, Birmingham, 1897, Elkington & Co., with half lobed body, on an oval foot, 10.7cm wide; a further cream jug, Birmingham, 1911, Joseph Gloster, the half lobed body raised on an oval foot, 7cm high (inc. handle); a salt cellar, Birmingham, 1919, Abrahams Brothers, of circular form, on three paw feet, with clear glass liner, 9.5cm dia.; and a small Victorian trowel (handle deficient), London, 1882, 11cm long, total weighable silver approx. 9.9ozt (7) Footnotes: Harris & Son is a family firm founded in Perth, Western Australia, in 1921 by the brothers Charles and Harold who relocated there from England. The business specialized in producing works of silverware and gold jewellery. From the 1950s, the works produced often featured the unique wildflowers of Western Australia. The Harris' creations are enjoyed by royalty and heads of state around the world. Some spoons produced by the firm are part of the collection of the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. London & North Western Railway silver presentation trowel inscribed PRESENTED TO PHILIP WHITEWAY ESQ ON THE OCCASION OF LAYING THE FIRST STONE FOR THE RAILWAY BRIDGE ACROSS THE RIVER MERSEY AT RUNCORN XII APRIL MDCCCLXIV (12th April 1864) With makers name J. Mayer Silversmith Liverpool and hallmarked for Chester. The Runcorn Railway Bridge, Ethelfleda Bridge or Britannia Bridge crosses the River Mersey at Runcorn Gap between Runcorn and Widnes in Cheshire. The design for the bridge and viaducts was produced by William Baker the chief engineer of the L&NWR. Preparatory work for the bridge and approach viaducts commenced in 1863 and the bridge was completed in 1868 and was opened for traffic on 10 October. The first goods traffic crossed the bridge on 1 February 1869 and the first passenger train on 1 April. In excellent condition measures 12in long.
