A pottery moon shaped vase with decoration of a sunflower to one side and an iris to the other 24cm high, together with a Adderley moon shaped vase with pink flower decoration Condition Report: sunflower vase - has an overall crazed effect under the decoration. No chips or cracks. Gilt rubbed to top rim. Adderley vase - light crazing all over. No chips or cracks. Gilt rubbed to top rim and base.

Two pottery chargers,dated 1880, each painted with ladies by Arthur Midgley (1852-1919), one wearing a daisy chain with flowing auburn hair, the edge with a daisy flower border, inscribed and dated verso, restored,42cm diameter,the other with with a Grecian lady, the border with sunflower petals, inscribed and dated verso,41cm diameter (2)Arthur Midgley (1852-1919)Midgley was born just before the start of the Crimean War and he died just after the end of the First World War. His mother was Elizabeth Gibson, of the famous Saffron Walden Quaker banking family, and the Midgleys and Gibsons were connected by family ties and shared interests as well as religion. Arthur Midgley was one of those intriguing Victorian figures of a man of substantial independent means, well-travelled and well versed in science and the arts, without any profession, and given over to public service, philanthropy and good causes. Apart from his philanthropic work on a number of national charities, Arthur Midgley was a local Justice of the Peace, town councillor, Secretary of the Saffron Walden Hospital, a Poor Law Guardian, and Chairman of the Boys' British School Managers. He was also a prominent Quaker.
