Samuel Shelley (1750-1808?), a portrait miniature of Viscount Augustus Keppel 1st Viscount Keppel (1725-1786) in an officers uniform, gold bordered blue coat, white frilled cravat and powdered hair en queue, approx. 85 x 70mm, presented in an ornate frame Keppel, approx. 80mm, framed. Biographical note: Samuel Shelley was born in Whitechapel in 1750 and primarily self-taught. He entered the Royal Academy School in 1774 where he was influenced by the work of Sir Joshua Reynolds. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1774-1804. His work included oil paintings and watercolours but is most remembered for his miniature portraits, many of which are housed in notable British Museums.
