OGAWA HARITSU (RITSUO): A FINE CERAMIC AND LACQUER INLAID KIRI WOOD RYOSHIBAKO (DOCUMENT BOX) AND COVER WITH BUGAKU ACCOUTREMENTSAttributed to Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo, 1663-1747), probably by Michizuki Hanzan (1743-1790), sealed KanJapan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of rectangular form, carved from kiri (paulownia) wood of an attractive grain and color, the rounded edges with gold lacquer, the sides and cover inlaid with glazed ceramic, polychrome lacquer, and mother-of-pearl, depicting the various elements needed to perform the bugaku dance, including a fierce mask with phoenix headdress, a drum with beaters, a biwa and plectrum, a torikabuto, a flute and cymbals, a sho and a koto, the interior with a small ceramic inlay and the inlaid ceramic seal KAN – a seal used by Ogawa Haritsu and his followers. This type of pink seal was used by Michizuki Hanzan (1743-1790), a direct pupil of Ogawa Haritsu.HEIGHT 17.3 cm, WIDTH 28.6 cm, DEPTH 23 cmCondition: Good condition with minor wear, scattered losses (some of them likely intended), natural age cracks, few minuscule chips to edges, some nicks and scratches, one small ceramic inlay to the interior of the cover is lost. All as is to be expected from a Ritsuo box.Provenance: Christie’s, 27 October 1981, London, sale 2232, lot 371, purchased by William R. Appleby (1915-2007) and Elinor Appleby (1920-2020), longtime donors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Mrs. Appleby had a particular interest in Asian art, and she and her husband supported the Department of Asian Art as well as the Fund for The Met, providing for important acquisitions and institutional initiatives.Ogawa Haritsu (formerly often referred to outside Japan by his alternative name of Ritsuo) was among the first Japanese lacquer artists to establish an independent reputation outside of the hereditary craft dynasties of Kyoto, Edo, and Kanazawa. The stunning color and patina are indicative of an early piece. Large, generously excavated himotoshi through the back and underside.HEIGHT 3. 4 cmCondition: Good condition with ‘natural flaws’ to the material.Provenance: British private collection.The Samisen (Shamisen) is a traditional three-stringed instrument. Oni are frequently depicted playing it, usually next to Emma-O, the king of hell. This oni plays his instrument with an impressive vigor, almost appearing like a rock star.

Gibson Robert Johnson L-1 signature guitar, with inlaid name to the 18 fret fingerboard, serial number 11801040, in case with warrantee cards, slide, and picks.25 inch scale length.Condition report: The neck is original and in good order and is straight with a good action. There is virtually no wear to the frets. The guitar has some very minor light plectrum scratches and other minor marks from clothing to the back and sides.

Status Quo: Alan Lancaster's Fender Mustang Bass Guitar,1968,serial no. 245188 stamped on F-series neckplate, shaped, twin cutaway offset body in mauve finish, single active pickup with two rotary controls, three-ply laminated scratchplate, Indian rosewood fingerboard with white dot markers, headstock with Fender decal and machineheads, in hard, faux-skin rectangular plush-lined case with Status Quo and other stickers, the chrome scratchplate, original pickups, strap and packet of strings within, guitar 41 1/2in (105.5cm) longFootnotes:Provenance: Lots 117-127 are from the Alan Lancaster Collection.Best known as a founding member of the rock band Status Quo, Lancaster contributed to songwriting, and vocals on albums and live concerts, taking the lead on tracks such as 'Backwater', 'Is There A Better Way', 'Bye Bye Johnny', 'High Flyer' and 'Roadhouse Blues' etc. Having formed the band in 1962 with schoolmate, Francis Rossi, his final performance as a full-time member of Status Quo was at Wembley Stadium on 13 July 1985 for the opening of Live Aid. Alan joined the original line-up of the band for reunion concerts in 2013 and 2014.This guitar was used on virtually all Quo's live and studio work by Alan from 1968 to 1978. Originally white, it was stripped back to a natural wood finish in the early '70s, with a chrome scratchplate added later. In the late '70s it was sprayed mauve and the scratchplate changed back to the white laminate version, with replacement EMG active pickup. The lead pieces attached to the back of the body are weights to enable the guitar to hang at the correct angle when Alan was standing and strapped. The piece of felt at the bridge end was to dampen any hard hits from the plectrum that might make unwanted 'thumps'. An incredible condition rare vintage 1960's (1964) Selcol made The Beatles ' New Beat ' plastic acoustic model guitar. Burgundy, red and orange plastic construction, with four strings and all  tuning pegs present. Features facsimile autographs to the corner and a printed sticker of all four Beatles to the top. '  New Beat ' silver coloured emblem also to body. Selcol makers label to sound hole. Also still retains one original burgundy guitar plectrum / pick. Appears in very good condition, with no cracks splits or visible damage -(one string missing). Survives within its rare original cardboard box, which still retains the original paper label to top, and generally appears mint. Original tissue paper still remains. A rare and great example of early Beatles merchandise. Guitar measures approx; 80cm tall.
