*Arthur Mailey. M.V. ‘Winchester Castle’. Union-Castle Line. Official menu from the ship dated 3rd October 1949. The ‘Winchester Castle’ travelled between England and South Africa and this menu is marked with printed title ‘Outward Bound’, so I assume it was travelling to South Africa. The menu with colour illustration of a bee eater to front cover, Music Programme and menu to inner pages and ‘Autographs’ page to rear cover. This page has an excellent and attractive original pen and ink caricature self portrait of Arthur Mailey next to his ink signature, the caricature high lighted in colour wash to show off his red nose and is also signed by seventeen cricketers including Jack Crapp (Gloucestershire), ‘Jack’ Oakes, J.H. Cornford and George Cox (Sussex), Frank Woodhead (Notts), ‘Alec’ Coxon and Johnny Wardle (Yorkshire), Jim Laker (Surrey), Don Kenyon (Worcs), Jim Bailey, Leo Harrison and Neville Rogers (Hants), A.E. Rhodes (Derbys), Jack Young (Middlesex), Dai Davies and Phil Clift (Glamorgan) etc. Minor foxing otherwise in very good condition Arthur Mailey was presumably travelling to South Africa to report on the forthcoming Test series between South Africa and Australia, but as to the other signatures, their was no tour involving these players in 1949/50 and many of them were not Test players, presumably they were going out to South Africa to coach in the winter season?
