*PHIL ROGERS (1951-2020): A LARGE STONEWARE BOTTLE VASE, of globular form with waisted neck, the body with all-over tenmoku glaze, one side with stylised tree decoration in iron-red, impressed marks to foot rim, stoneware, 27.5cm highNote: Phil Rogers was born in Newport, Gwent in 1951. He attended Newport and Swansea Colleges of Art and had originally intended to become a painter. While still at college in the early 1970s Rogers and a friend taught themselves to throw. Their only guidance came from Bernard Leach’s A Potter’s Book and their throwing practice came in the form of competitions to see who could produce the biggest pot.Rogers has written respected books on ash glazes, throwing techniques and salt glazing. He has run workshops and lectured all over the world, most notably in South Korea and the USA and his work is held in more than 50 museums worldwide. In 2011 Rogers won the prestigious Vasefinder International prize for the best vase in the world.

Phil Rogers (1951-2020) collection of studio ceramics, including a small jug with iron glaze, with seal mark to the base, 13cm high, ash glazed bowl, seal mark to the foot, 8cm high x 11.5cm wide, a pair of small mugs with iron glaze and repeating impressed design, each with seal mark to the footrim, 9.5cm high overall, a small lighter brown glazed bowl, seal mark to the footrim,7.5cm high overall x 10.5cm wide, small yunomi with impressed leaf motifs, seal mark to the foot, 8.5cm high overall, a plain iron glazed yunomi, seal mark to the footrim, 9.5cm high and a small banded yunomi with repeating impressed design, seal mark to the footrim, 7.5cm high (8) All with surface dust, dirt and scratches. Minimal glaze, firing faults and crazing in places. One of the pair of mugs with small glaze chip to the rim. Small firing/glaze faults on the leaf yunomi. Small manufacturing flaw to the banded yunomi, very minor near the footrim where the glaze meets the foot, hardly noticable, mentioned only for transparency. Otherwise seems ok.
