Lot 256

Make & Model:Wolseley, Hornet Date of Reg:CDX409C Colour:Green cc:998 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:87857 Transmission:manual Summary:This 1965 Cumberland Green and Snowberry White Wolseley Hornet MkII benefitted from a full repaint a few years ago by a previous owner. The engine has also been replaced with a later 998cc unit. The vendor has replaced the clutch slave and master cylinder as well as fitted four brand new tyres and a new battery. The Hornet was registered in May 1965 and is showing 87,857 miles on its odometer. Its last MoT expired in April 2019 after being tested the previous year at an indicated 86,735 miles. However, as an historic vehicle, it no longer requires annual testing. The vendor reports that the Wolsleley runs and drives well and is reliable, although the right front indicator is currently inoperative.   Paperwork includes the current and a past V5C, old tax discs, MoTs back to 1996, a large stack of invoices and a write-up from a previous owner detailing the work done during his ownership.

Lot 349

Make & Model:Triumph, Stag Date of Reg:PHJ256K Colour:Yellow cc:3000 Fuel Type:Petrol Mileage:113951 Summary:This Triumph Stag was built in 1971 but seems to have been re-registered in March 1993, perhaps because it had fallen off the DVLA's database. Six registered keepers are recorded on the V5C and the odometer shows 113,951 miles. Its last MoT expired in April 2024 after being tested the previous year at an indicated 113,951 miles. However, as an historic vehicle, the Stag is now MoT-exempt. The vendor tells us that the car has a water leak, which is suspected to be the heater matrix or radiator, so this will need to be resolved. Having not been used for six months, its battery is also no longer holding charge, and the vendor feels that it would benefit from a service as well. The head gasket has been replaced and there's also a heavy duty timing chain, electronic ignition, immobiliser, overdrive gearbox and the right-hand floorpan replaced plus other welding. A new clutch and brake master cylinder has also been fitted. The vendor has owned the car since 2022; prior to that it was stored for eight years. Paperwork with the Stag includes the current and past V5Cs, print-out on online MoT data back to 2006, a large amount of assorted invoices including one for a replacement engine in October 2010 and a replacement overdrive gearbox in October 2011, MoT certificates back to 1997, and a photocopy of the old Passport to Service book stamped up to 48,745 miles in in the 1980s. There's also a Heritage Certificate showing that the car was once New White and photos of a full respray from 2004.

BERNARD DE HOOG (DUTCH 1867 - 1943), COTTAGE INTERIOR oil on canvas, signedframed and under glassimage size 49cm x 39cm, overall size 76cm x 66cmNote: Dutch artist, Bernard De Hoog, produced a rich oeuvre of gentle interior scenes, which celebrated the everyday moments within family - particularly between mothers and their children. Newborns are cradled within their mother's arms while siblings read in rustic kitchens. In many respects, De Hoog’s work is comparable to the great Dutch painter, Jozef Israëls (1924-1911) and ultimately rooted within the traditions of the Dutch masters. During his time studying under the eminent Jan van Essen, he produced numerous copies of old masters while honing histechnique. It’s said that his career began through chance when working in an office for a merchant. Rather than figures in a ledger, the merchant discovered various sketches and drawings and was so impressed that he asked the young De Hoog to paint his wife. This, in turn, led to the artist’s tutelage under a drawing master and later, an academy. When we look back across his body of work, the consistent thread is a celebration of simple family life and the instinctive love between a mother and child. Misty sentimentalism majestically described with an impressionistic touch. In 1939, De Hoog’s work was shown in an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

BRITISH SCHOOL (18TH CENTURY), JOHN MONTAGU, 2ND DUKE OF MONTAGU, KG, GMB, PC, FRS oil on canvasframedimage size 125cm x 105cm, overall size 160cm x 132cmProvenance: Scans of correspondence between the current vendor and Mungo Campbell on Scottish National Portrait Gallery stationery dated 8th November 1985 in which Mr Campbell asks on behalf of the SNPG "Would it be possible to order a photograph of your portrait of The Duke of Montagu(e)" are available on request and to the purchaser.Note: John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu, KG, GMB, PC, FRS (1690 – 5 July 1749), styled Viscount Monthermer until 1705 and Marquess of Monthermer between 1705 and 1709, was a British peer. Montagu went on the grand tour with Pierre Sylvestre. On 17 March 1705, John was married to Lady Mary Churchill, daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. On 23 October 1717, Montagu was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1719, and was made Order of the Bath, a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1725, and a Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge of England which was the first Masonic Grand Lodge to be created. On 22 June 1722, George I appointed Montagu governor of the islands of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent in the West Indies. He in turn appointed Nathaniel Uring, a merchant sea captain and adventurer, as deputy-governor. Uring went to the islands with a group of seven ships, and established settlement at Petit Carenage. Unable to get enough support from British warships, he and the new colonists were quickly run off by the French. In 1739, the country's first home for abandoned children, the Foundling Hospital was created in London. Montagu was a supporter of this effort and was one of the charity's founding governors. He also financed the education of two notable Black British figures of the age, Ignatius Sancho (a butler at his Blackheath home, Montagu House) and Francis Williams, allegedly sending the latter to Cambridge University (the university has no record of his having studied there). In 1745, Montagu raised a cavalry regiment known as Montagu's Carabineers, which, however, was disbanded after the Battle of Culloden. Montagu was a notorious practical joker, his mother-in-law writing of him that "All his talents lie in things only natural in boys of fifteen years old, and he is about two and fifty; to get people into his garden and wet them with squirts, and to invite people to his country houses and put things in beds to make them itch, and twenty such pretty fancies as these." Montagu is said to have once dunked the political philosopher Montesquieu in a tub of cold water as a joke. Montagu also commissioned William Hogarth to portray Chief Justice John Willes unflatteringly in a number of cartoons series Before and After (Hogarth) in which lusty amoral rakes seduce women. Montagu's country place, Boughton House, Northamptonshire, was laid out by him as a miniature Versailles, and now belonging to the Buccleuch family. After his death, his town residence, Montagu House, Bloomsbury, on the present site of the British Museum, received and for many years held the national collections, which under the name of the British Museum were first opened to the public in 1759.

However, since the sixteenth century the senior line of the Beavis family were of the manor of Clyst Satchville, Devon. A pair of portraits attributed to Mary Beale, traditionally regarded as likenesses of the sitter's parents Richard (1621–1702) and Margarett Beavis, née Davie (1627–c. 1717) appeared in Bonhams' Old Master Paintings sale in London on 8th December 2004, lot 2. The attribution of the pair, however, is not universally accepted. But because the style and dimensions of these portraits are so comparable to the present work, particularly in their inclusion of painted stone cartouches and the use of a similar colour palette, it is very probable that all three oils relate and are likely part of the same series.
