As a journalist, you will surely know how, never mind how much you check things out, there's always some damn detail you missed. I pray this is the only one!...' , a notecard, written to both sides, envelope dated 08. 02. 10, 'Dear David G, thanks for yours. Here are the bookplates, signed but if you'd like to send books too, please do so... I have a new novel coming out in October, so life is not dull. And - extraordinarily - some of my novels are being adapted simultaneously for film... we'll see!', a notecard dated 19 October 2011, 'We sit here waiting for a huge influx of family - 13 grandchildren at last count - and thinking how incredibly fortunate we have been in almost every department of life: almost eerily so. Yes, I hope you enjoyed the film as much as I do. Such care, such direction and performances...', another 1 p. letter dated 11 January, 2011, '... Yes, Snow is an inestimably charming man of great good heart. I never felt so unprotected as when we spoke. Never again!, a 2 pp. letter, dated 22 October 2012, '... Yes, I was tempted to act, & am just off to Hamburg to deliver another cameo part opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman in the movie of 'A Most Wanted Man', now in mid-shoot (I'm growing a beard for the part!) But I also wanted to paint & illustrate, did both, but in the end it was the writing that got me. New novel out in May...', a notecard, written to both sides, dated 24 May 2013, '... Very glad you enjoyed ADT. It's getting a good, rumbustuous reception - some hate it, as they should, and were meant to! To Hay next week for my swansong appearance - geriatrics? medal for long service to God knows whom - and then back to Cornwall, work, & a new novel, a new life, long overdue!', a notecard dated 20 May 2015, '... The audience inscrutable, but I think appreciative, & self-irony not on the menu... I love Larry O's effusive letters, so rich in insincerity and honeyed rhetoric ('beyond words... quite overwhelmed?'). Denholm was extraordinary: ex rear gunner, POW, gay, married, uberintelligent in an actorish way, and utterly endearing - and unreconciled...', a 1 pp. letter dated 21 October 2018, '... Yes, just finished a new novel, like it, out next year some time. And 'Spy Who...' & 'Legacy of ...' are in pre-production for a 6-hour BBC series, so life bobs along. Enjoy Poole. I was born there. We are in bad shape & I'm afraid I may dwindle from your mailing list while we sort ourselves out. My wife Jane is on a severe course of chemo, & I am in similar shape, about to undergo an experimental therapy which involves nuking me. The grandchildren are enchanted. WILLIAM BRADLEY LAMOND RBA (SCOTTISH 1857 - 1924), MAKING BANNOCKS oil on canvas, signed, titled label verso framed image size 36cm x 46cm, overall size 47cm x 55cm Label verso: Forrest McKay, Edinburgh Provenance: Bonhams, Edinburgh, 9th June 2011 lot 167. Note: William Bradley Lamond was born at Newtyle, Angus. He had no formal art training and worked for the Caledonian Railway company for many years. He initially specialised in portraits and later worked on landscapes which have been described as "vigorous impressionistic scenes in oil – with a strong use of colour". He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1906, and exhibited at the Royal Academy (London), Royal Scottish Academy and Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. William Bradley Lamond first publicly exhibited his work at Dunfermline's Fine Art Exhibition in 1883, followed by the Dundee Fine Art Exhibition in 1884. Five years later he showed at the Royal Scottish Academy for the first time with the painting "A Mile Abune Dundee". In 1890 he became one of the founding members of the Dundee Graphic Arts Association and had work shown at Robert Scott's gallery in the city. His first notable commission came the following year – a presentation portrait of Sgt Major Kilgour of the Dundee Highlanders. Around 1894, he hit on one of his most profitable subjects – shore scenes featuring seaweed gatherers at work with horse and cart. He showed one such scene at Scott's which the Evening Telegraph hailed alliteratively as "a brilliant bit of brightsome work". It was soon bought by a local collector and Lamond painted many more variations on the same theme, including "A Breezy Day" (1896). In 1895 he had his most successful year yet, showing at the Glasgow Institute and the RSA and ending with an exhibition of paintings and sketches in his studio at 61 Reform Street. Although Lamond eschewed modern art, his compositions were often regarded as distinctive due to his preference for capturing particular effects rather than selecting subject matter because of its social or symbolic meaning, in contrast to other Dundee painters such as John Duncan or Stewart Carmichael. In 1898, 60 of his paintings were auctioned by William Fyfe at the City Assembly Rooms, fetching prices of up to 19 guineas. In 1900 he showed at the Royal Academy (London) for the first time and soon began to cultivate a London audience. In 1902 he opened his first one-man show in London, at Clifford's Gallery in Haymarket. Although many Dundee illustrators and cartoonists had enjoyed success in London (such as Martin Alexander and Max Cowper), the city's painters had rarely made such an impact in the capital. Lamond returned to London in 1903 to undertake a number of commissions and later that year was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, recognised as "a painter of strength, with a true eye for colour harmonies and a special aptitude for interpreting the beauties of northern landscape and coast scenery". He continued to show work at the exhibitions of the RBA, RSA, Glasgow Institute and GAA but A, but in 1906 his health broke down. By summer 1908 Lamond was back in Dundee, where he held an exhibition of his latest work in his new studio at 3 Constitution Road; the following year he moved to 27 Bank Street where he would remain for the rest of his life. In 1915 he gained a celebrity patron in the person of music hall legend Harry Lauder, who commissioned two paintings from him and visited him periodically in both Dundee and Auchmithie. During the Great War, Lamond continued to paint as much as ever, spending his summers in Auchmithie then showing the results in exhibitions in his studio each autumn. Lamond died of pneumonia in 1924 at his home in William Street. Thirty-two of William Bradley Lamond's paintings are held in Scottish public collections.

Honoured Sir, Although it being the will of Providence that I should Be placed in that humble station in society, which might render it Presumption in me to address a gentleman in this manner, Yet Sir I do hope that your exalted virtues and affable demeanour And your sublime humility, will pardon the presumption of an inferior, on The present occasion.  Honourable Sir, it is not your exalted station in society But your acknowledged talents, your public and private worth (with those Of your late ever to be lamented lady) and the exalted character, both you And her ever bore, have induced me now to lay before your honour This humble testimony of my respect and esteem (for the memory Of her, whose handsomest virtues and mild demeanour have endeared her To all ranks and stations in life) and an humble but inadequate Testimonial of that respect and esteem in which you are held, not Only by your own tenantry, but by those whose misfortune it Is, to be obliged to drag out their existence under the despotic yoke Of fanatic intolerance and protestant ascendancy. Honourable Sir, if you will design favourably to accept this Humble testimony of my respect and esteem (the greatest that I Can offer), it will be one of the greatest favours that can Be conferred on him who most humbly but yet most Respectfully begs leave to subscribe [crease]  with the most [crease] respect, honourable Sir, Your most obedient And very humble servant. As a manuscript, unique and highly important pair, w.a.f.     (2) John Hyacinth Talbot (1794-1868) of Castle Talbot, Talbot Hall and Ballytrent, County Wexford, was the son of Matthew Talbot of Ballynamony, County Wexford and Jane, Countess d'Arcy, and educated at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire. Talbot was first elected Repeal Association MP for New Ross at the 1832 general election and held the seat until 1841, when he did not seek re-election. He sat again for the seat from 1847 to 1852 when, again, he did not seek re-election. He was selected as High Sheriff of Wexford for 1855. He was a member of the Reform Club. In 1837 he commissioned AWN Pugin to design the Catholic church in Bree; it was opened in 1839. In 1822, he married Anne Eliza Redmond, only daughter of Walter Redmond of Ballytrent (great-great-uncle of John Redmond, MP). She died 5 October 1826.   They had 3 daughters, all of whom married. In 1851 he married Eliza, daughter of Sir John Power, Bt, with whom he had a son and a daughter.  The son, John Hyacinth Talbot II, born in 1851, succeeded to the estate and died without issue in 1920.  See pedigree in BIFR p. 929.

IMPORTANTE ET RARE COUPE EN JADE VERT, YIDynastie Yuan (1279-1368)/Début de la Dynastie Ming (1368-1644)AN IMPORTANT AND VERY RARE GREEN JADE POURING BOWL, YIYuan Dynasty/early Ming DynastyOf circular shape supported on a flat, slightly countersunk base, with gently rounded sides and lipped rim, set on one side with an angular outward flaring spout above a short cloud-scroll underneath, set on the other side with a triangular handle in the form of a pierced and openwork ribbon centered on a small peach, the stone a translucent, soft mottled green colour polished to a soft sheen. 21 cm (8 1/4 in) wide across handle and spout Footnotes:PROPERTY FROM A GERMAN FAMILY COLLECTION德國家族珍藏元/明早期 碧玉匜Provenance:Collected in China between 1894 and 1922, then handed down in the family by descent.來源於1894年至1922年間得自中國,後經家族流傳至今This green jade pouring vessel is incredibly rare and is one of the very few jade vessels made in the between the Song and early Ming dynasties. Jessica Rawson notes that the sheer extravagance involved in carving jade vessels may account for the absence of jade vessels in tombs of the pre-Han period, and the same reason may apply to the scarcity of jade vessels in tombs and hoards of the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming periods. In the early period, bronze technology enabled the production of highly complex vessels shapes and designs that were difficult to copy in jade, a material that did not lend itself to articulation or depth of decorative detail when carved. As the use of bronze vessels declined and ceramic wares with distinctive shapes and glazes gained in importance, the use of jade to fashion vessels of similar shapes and designs made in ceramic was still exceptional. Scholars have noted that the influence of Western and Central Asian metalware played an important role in the evolution of ceramic vessels and lacquerware made in the late Tang, Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties. In fact, this particular jade pouring vessel with its distinctive angular spout and flat openwork handle is an example that perfectly illustrates the links between metalware, ceramics and jade in the Song and Yuan period. This unusual spouted pouring vessel known as yi is a form that appeared both in ceramics and metal in the 14th century. Examples made in ceramic and porcelain are plentyful and well documented, see, for instance, a Yuan dynasty celadon-glazed Longquan pouring cup yi excavated in Taishun county, Zhejiang, illustrated in Celadons from Longquan Kilns, Taipei, 2014, no. 148-2; compare also with a blue and white pouring vessel of this shape in the collection of the British Museum, London, illustrated in Jessica Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p. 69, fi. 1:21; see also a Yuan dynasty blue and white spouted bowl excavated in Lintao County, Gansu Province, illustrated in Splendors in Smalt: Art of Yuan Blue-and-white Porcelain, Shanghai, 2012, pp. 148-149, no.42, lot 17, and an underglaze-red pouring vessel of this type published in Shane McCausland,The Mongol Century. Visual Cultures of Yuan China, 1271-1368, London, 2014, pp. 82-83, no. 24. The Mongol rulers of the Yuan dynasty took over the ceramic tradition of the kilns that flourished in southern China. They appropriated many of the existing ceramic shapes and designs to fit their taste and needs. The small loop beneath the spout of the ceramic pouring vessels is a reminder that in the nomadic tradition and culture similar vessels were hung from the belts of the Mongol horsemen owners. The angular spout and the sharp lipped rim of this jade pouring vessel demonstrate that the form originally derived from metal prototypes as a silver pouring bowl inscribed with the year 1333 and excavated from a hoard in Hefei, Anhui, shows, see The World of Khublai Khan. Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty, New York, 2010, p. 83, fig. 115. Compare also with a related Yuan dynasty silver pouring bowl in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, published in Hiromi Kinoshita, Art of China. Highlights from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, 2018, p. 82. In Yuan culture, such pouring vessels were used to pour wine into smaller cups. and often appear together with yuhuchunping vases as Chuimei Ho observed in 'Social Life under the Mongols as seen in Ceramics', in Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, vol.59, 1994-95, p. 44. A mural discovered in the tomb of Zhang Andabuhua and his wife Li Yunxian, in Dongercun, Shaanxi, dated 1269, shows a table full of wine cups, a vase and a pouring vessel (Fig. 2). While this green jade pouring vessel is clearly related to Yuan dynasty ceramic and metalware examples, it is different from these rare silver examples as it also has a distinct triangular handle facing the spout on the other side of the vessel. This feature appears on three other rare jade vessels of similar shallow form but without a spout and described as cups, two dated to the Song dynasty, and the third to the Yuan dynasty, all three in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, published in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum. Jade. 5: Tang , Song, Liao, Jin and Yuan Dynasties, Beijing, 2011, nos. 62, 63 and 268 (Fig. 3).This unusual green jade pouring vessel appears to be unique as no other comparable piece is known. Closely related types of vessels made of silver and jade are equally scarce and suggest that not many were made. Known examples share different features meaning that they may have been individual commissions, luxury commodities reserved for members of the Yuan elite. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

PLEASE SEE CONDITION REPORT.A collection of First World War medals and ephemera to include:Distinguished Flying Cross awarded in the New Year’s Honours 1919.1914-1918 Victory Medal and War Medal with miniatures and oak leaves.Pilot's log book dating from September 1916 (Hendon), 1917 (Hounslow then Ismalia, Egypt and Sarona, Palestine/now Israel, as part of 113 Squadron and briefly 14 Squadron), through to October 1918 (total hours flown 638 hours, 50 mins), before joining 145 Squadron on 6th October 1918. The log details observation / reconnaissance, artillery patrols and bombing missions, machines flown, times, heights and other notes.Three hand-written notebooks covering September 1917 – July 1918 containing Alliban’s personal experiences and thoughts, sightseeing and learning of the area’s history, flying experiences and near-misses (including describing the “magnificent show” in which Captain Peter Drummond D.S.O. M.C. single-handedly engaged six German aircraft; Alliban hopes he is awarded a bar for his DSO after that - he was), stuck-in photographs / newsletter / newspaper articles and a Christmas 1917 dinner menu signed by fellow officers.A collection of observation and reconnaissance aerial photographs showing Jerusalem, Tabsor, Jaffa and Kerak etc (many coded with squadron and map references to the upper corners).Personal photographs including a group shot of officers to include Captain Norton MC, Major Cutbill and Lieutenant Dutton MC, and a photograph of a Nieuport Scout annotated verso ‘my machine’.Ephemera to include newspaper clippings, ‘Instructions for Contact Patrol Work by Aeroplanes’ leaflet issued by the General Staff in 1916 and copy of birth certificate.Second World War certificate for service with the Air Training Corps and approval note from the Air Ministry.Rosary beads and a ‘lucky charm’ silver Scoutmaster plumed hat badge.Douglas Alliban was the younger son of William Henry and Georgina Maud (nee Beaumont) and was brought up at Tupton Hall in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He enlisted with the Sherwood Foresters / Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment along with his older brother (by one year), William Beaumont Alliban, and joined the Royal Flying Corps in August 1916. Despite the fact that serving as aircrew in this incredibly early age of flying was considered one of the most dangerous roles in World War One, Douglas survived the war but his brother Lieutenant William Beaumont was tragically killed at St Quentin in 1917, aged 20, and is commemorated at Thiepval. No. 113 Squadron began service in 1917 with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force commanded by General Edmund Allenby. Initially, the squadron was a unit of the Royal Flying Corps, serving during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign as a reconnaissance, bomber, transport and missile operation squadron. The Royal Flying Corps (later RAF) itself had only been formed in 1912 as the air aim of the British Army, with the Middle East Brigade being established in July 1916. Despite being a relatively small unit, the RFC gave valuable assistance to the Army in the eventual defeat of Ottoman forces in Palestine, Trans Jordan and Mesopotamia (Iraq).Crucial to this was the role of aerial photography, which revolutionised the nature of warfare by enabling the accurate recording of enemy movements and defences, as well as mapping lesser-known terrain. However, this work was extremely hazardous, which is attested by many hair-raising accounts recorded in Alliban’s notebooks. Initially, the aircraft were generally unarmed, with the observer leaning over the side of the aircraft, camera in hand and changing plates with frozen fingers thousands of feet above land. And that’s before you take into account the presence of enemy aircraft. Alliban's log book coolly records regular instances such as "Engine failure. Had to land at Gamli. Guest of ANZAC Yeomanry... Working all night in sandstorm" and "Very foggy. Had to come down to within 50ft at times. Engine very bad. Cut out just near 'drome".Further to the military aspect, this collection contains fascinating personal details; from the photographs of fellow officers relaxing around their tents and Palestinians going about their business, to Alliban’s obvious captivation with this new environment he found himself in “Cairo is a topping place, even better than Alexandria. This hotel is absolutely the last word in Hotels” about Shepheard’s Hotel in Cairo (previously Hotel des Anglais). Also touching is the plumed silver Scoutmaster badge which Alliban carried with him as a lucky charm, which may have originally belonged to his brother who is recorded as working with the boy scouts while at Chesterfield Grammar School. Maybe the lucky charm worked for Douglas though, as the last pasted-in photograph in his notebooks shows a crashed aeroplane nose-down in the desert, which Alliban has forcefully annotated ‘Not mine’.Alliban was mentioned in dispatches for “gallantry and devotion to duty” for work from March to September 1918. His old school Eastbourne College’s roll of honour upon receipt of the DFC states that “His keenness and fearlessness have earned for him a high reputation. He has done most valuable work for his Squadron as a pilot, and is to be relied on at all times”. Sadly, this is listed above his brother, a fellow student, along with details of his death in France. Please note that this collection has been entered for sale by a direct family member but it's likely that the medals are infact replacements as the ribbon on the DFC is later and the naming to the British War and Victory medals are later although all the related effects are all original. A matching group of medals with copied ephemera are to be sold by Noonans of Mayfair on the 5th of December.

* CHARLOTTE CHEVERTON (BRITISH 1960 - 1991), GRANDPA'S BASKET mixed media on board, attributed and titled on printed gallery exhibition label versomounted, framed and under glass image size 12cm x 8cm, overall size 23cm x 20cm Label verso: The Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh.Note: Leith School of Art (Edinburgh) was set up in 1988 by two art teachers, Mark and Lottie Cheverton. Their aim was to establish a supportive, community learning environment for art students. The Chevertons ran the School together for three years, offering a Foundation course and a range of short courses. They recognised that studying art could be a challenging experience, and they wanted to create a positive tradition for teaching art and a learning environment where students would feel nurtured and grow in their ability. Tragically in 1991, the Chevertons were killed in a car accident. It was clear that their original vision of teaching was a strong one, and in 1992 Philip Archer, one of their close friends who shared their vision, became Principal. Since that time the School has grown and evolved. New year-long courses have been added, the short course programme has expanded, there are community classes and dedicated courses for schools within the School’s Outreach Programme. There are approximately forty members of staff, including around thirty teaching and teaching support staff. The School building has grown, expanding to fill all the interior spaces in the building. In 2000 all the outside space around the School was converted to inside space, resulting in the addition of the sculpture court, library and gallery area. In 2014 the School expanded again by leasing space at St James Church, which is located close to the School on North Junction Street. It is a lovely 1930s church hall with two bright, spacious studio spaces and an outdoor area. Throughout all this change, the vision of the original founders remains strong: to create a School with a vital artistic life where both tradition and innovation work together allowing students to produce work of distinctive quality and character. Lottie was a talented artist in her own right but she and her husband created an institution that has gone on to win widespread accolades and their vision has inspired and continues to inspire many hundreds of artists.
