1782 Admiral Rodney and the Battle of the Saintes: an unusual pearlware mug of slender form, the foot, rim and handle with tinted glaze, the black painted ground moulded with full-length portraits centred by an oval medallion of a warship surmounted by a ribbon indistinctly named ‘Ville de Paris’ circa 1782, 98mm(commemorative, pottery, naval, military, war).* During the Battle of Saintes, fought on 12th April 1782, the French flag ship ‘Ville de Paris’ came under fierce attack, seriously damaged, she was surrendered to the British under the command of Rodney.
