Part II Containing A Compendious Body of Physick, 2 parts in one (part 1 is 3rd ed. and part 2 is 2nd ed.), pub. The cookery part is well arranged, the medical part is full of horrors. The treatment for appendicitis is to 'apply a live puppy to the naked belly' and follow up with a cataplasm of rotten apples or 'sheeps-dung boil'd with milk'. (1)

Temple Bar A London Magazine for Town and Country Readers, vols 1-4, 6-99 & 101-133, 1861-1906, lacks only vols. 5 & 100, vols. 1-39 bound in publisher's orig. blind-stamped cloth gilt, a little rubbed, remainder bound in stout library buckram or half morocco (some a little worn), all 8vo. This monthly magazine was started by business-publisher John Maxwell, in the light of the success of the Cornhill Magazine. The first editor was George Augustus Sala (vols. 1-9, December 1860-November 1863), followed by Edmund Yates (vols. 10-21, December 1863-September 1867), then George Bentley, Richard Bentley and Gertrude Townshend Mayer. The magazine contains first appearances of novels by Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Wilkie Collins, among many others. (132)

John Rigby & Co A .275 bolt action sporting rifle, no. 59959. 59 59599 59 25-inch barrel with hooded ramp foresight and raised rearsight with folding leafs to 400 yds, the receiver mounted with a Zeiss Diavari C 3-9x36 telescopic sight, bolt with push forward safety catch, magazine with detachable baseplate, the half length figured stock with pistol grip and ribbed steel buttplate, sling eyes, 14 1/2-inch pull, nitro proof, in its full length canvas case 9lb. The telescopic sight for this rifle fits both this rifle, and the following lot, the two having been used together.

Boss & Co A magnificent brass bound oak and leather cartridge magazine for about 500 cases, the green beize lined lid with makers paper label, oak dividers, lid impressed with the initials A.G., with makers paper labels applied to each end dated 1937 and 1938 together with its Boss & Co. luggage label inscribed A. Gusar Esq, International Sportsmans Club It is very rare to find magazines of this size and form by this maker. It remains in exceptional condition for its age.

The school magazine of King Henry VIII School, Coventry. Philip Larkin attended the school between 1930 and 1940, and he made regular literary contributions to the magazine, as well as helping to edit it. His poetical contributions here are as follows: no. 158 - 'Winter Nocturne' and 'Fragment from May'; no. 159 - 'Summer Nocturne'; no. 160 - 'Street Lamps'; and no. 161 - 'Spring Warning'. His prose contributions are: no. 155 - 'Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow'; no. 156 - 'Fears of the Brave'; and no. 160 - 'Happy Fields'. There is also a letter to the editor from Larkin in no. 159. (6)
