Brook 1656. *** Rare. We can trace only two others copies at auction in the last 27 years. The second part is Perspicillum microcosmologicum: or A prospective for the discovery of the lesser world. The publication of the work was something of a disaster for the author. Parts of the work are given over to a rather vehement attack on Nicholas Culpeper`s astrological tendencies. However in his haste to find a patron Coles dedicated the book to Elias Ashmole who unbeknownst to him was an astrologist. The second issue "necessitated the removal of the most offending leaves in the dedication and text` (Hunt). Provenance: `Sum John Aubry:R April 4th " 1686`; `Georgis Ayliffe` (contemporary ink inscriptions to front pastedown).

Walter James Steggles (British, 1902-1997) Kilmersdon, Somerset, signed lower right "W J Steggles", oil on canvas, 34 x 44cm (13.26 x 17.16in). Provenance: From the artist`s family. Walter Steggles was a leading member of the East London Group which was one of the most innovative and productive movements in British art in the first half of the twentieth century, and which came to prominence in the late twenties and early thirties. He attended art classes at Bethnal Green Men`s Institute in 1925 under the tutelage of Charles Genge and then John Cooper. The classes moved to the Bow and Bromley Evening Institute and in due course the East London Group was formed. They held their first public show at the Whitechapel in 1928 followed by the No Jury Art Club show in 1929. In the same year the Group had their first show at the Lefevre Gallery, London, and this led to annual shows there until 1936. Also in 1936 Wally exhibited at the prestigious Venice Biennale along with another Group member, Elwin Hawthorne. He and his brother Harold had a joint show at Lefevre in 1938. During this period he also exhibited widely in mixed shows at the Redfern, Agnew, Tooth, Burlington and Mayor Galleries and some of his work was exhibited at a small exhibition at the Tate. He had several works acquired by the Contemporary Art Society and Shell commissioned him for two designs for their iconic poster campaigns of the period. Walter Steggles studied under Walter Sickert, William Coldstream, Rodrigo Moynihan and Gerald Ososki, and also trained as an engraver and etcher with the encouragement of Colnaghi but the depression of the early 1930s put a stop to these pursuits. Later he also studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts under Kirkland Jamieson, F J Porter and Bernard Meninsky. Unlike his brother Harold, Wally continued to paint after the war and was still active well into his eighties, latterly painting mainly landscapes and provincial street scenes

He had spent nearly three years in Italy studying art when Christian VI of Denmark ordered him to go to Egypt in 1737 on an exploratory mission where he made drawings on the spot. He spent about a year in Egypt and was the first European to penetrate as far as Derr in Nubia and to publish descriptions of any Nubian temples. A POST WAR TEA POT with a laminated rosewood handle & finial, the circular body with a cone shaped upper section and a flaring, triform spout, by Norman Poynton, London 1957; 4.5" (11.5 cms) high overall; 16 oz * Norman Reginald George Poynton registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall 14th July 1936 giving his address as the Leicester College of Art. He made a number of civic items for the City of Leicester (some of which were designed by Kenneth Holmes, the Principal of the College, & some designed by Norman himself). One piece, a scroll holder designed by Poynton & Holmes jointly, and made in 1950 by Poynton & D.J.F. Hodge was exhibited at Goldsmiths Hall 1951 in the British Silver by Contemporary Craftsmen Exhibition.
