The oval dial is in silver, finely engraved, with black enameling, the dial marked "pour 49 degrez" (49° being Paris), with three concentric hour scales, a folding triangular gnomon adjustable to latitudes 40° to 60,° with a finely engraved bird and foliate designs, and with a rosette design at center, the reverse of the dial with a list of cities, their latitudes, and the maker's signature, the dial set on two silver feet; with a four-direction recessed compass, the steel needle mounted on a pivot, the compass face covered with flat glass, the reverse in silver with an engraved rosette design; housed in the original oval fishskin case, lined in fitted red velvet, with metal clasp and hinge. The case measures 2 1/2 x 1 7/8 inches (6 x 4.5 cm). The silver is quite tarnished, and would benefit from polishing; the case is sound, with minor wear to the exterior, and the velvet-lined interior rubbed and worn by the sundial in the expected places. Pierre Sevin manufactured scientific instruments of the highest quality in Paris from 1662 to 1685, earning himself the title Ingenieur du Roi. His clients included the Academie des Sciences, the Paris Observatoire, and the astronomer Jean Richer, who used Sevin's instruments during his 1671 voyage to Cayenne in French Guyana. This is a rare, silver, "Butterfield" style pocket sundial, finely engraved and enameled in black. This type of dial began to appear around 1677, first manufactured by the Paris-based clock and instrument maker, Michael Butterfield. "Butterfield dials" are defined as being portable horizontal sundials, with an elongated hexagonally shaped hour scale, and a folding adjustable gnomon decorated with a bird. They were an immensely popular style of timepiece, copied from the late 17th century onwards. Sundials by Pierre Sevin are held in various important institutional collections, such as The Louvre Museum and The Royal Museums, Greenwich. No condition report? [GLOBE - EDUCATIONAL TOY]MOGG, EDWARD. Mogg's Dissected Globe. London: Edward Mogg, March 1st, 1812. Twelve pieces of printed and hand-colored card slotted together to form a globe, comprising two vertical sections with maps of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, two vertical sections with an armillary sphere, four horizontal sections with the circles of latitude, a central diagonal section with the horizon band, and the bottom horizontal section with a compass rose. The globe measures approximately 6 x 4 inches (16 x 9 cm); offered assembled and housed in a Victorian-style glass cloche on a giltwood base; Together with, An Explanation and Description of Mogg's Dissected Globe... and Directions for Forming the Globe. Printed pamphlet; Mogg's Dissected Globe. Advertisement. Printed card advertisement; and The original case. Printed card, with an image of a table globe, the title, and imprint. The pamphlet, ad, and case are framed together. The globe with a small loss to the printed surface at the top of the Western Hemisphere affecting the meridian ring and the northeasternmost part of North America, slight curve to the globe's feet, faint creasing and toning to the pamphlet at edges, the ad lightly toned and with a pencil mark, the case with dampstaining and wear, and a small label numbered in ink, complete with all parts, not examined out of the cloche or frame. Edward Mogg's "Dissected Globe" is a cleverly designed puzzle toy that taught children through play, rather than by study or rote memorization. By reading the pamphlet and assembling the globe, students would learn the basic principles of astronomy and geography, as well as the functions of the various parts of globes and other astronomical instruments. This trend of learning through active experimentation was very much in vogue in England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as evidenced by the numerous forms of educational toys and games that were produced during the period. Following the success of this globe, Mogg published a dissected celestial sphere the following year. While his dissected globes are scarce, they are even rarer when found complete with the original pamphlet, advertising leaf, and printed card case.No condition report? These large-scale posters proved very popular and were issued in several editions throughout the early 1950s. This example is referenced as "10 - 1950."Louis Boucher designed and produced posters for Air France for nearly thirty years and this clever design manages to give the suggestion of a blend of fantasy and reality, and at the same time provides the viewer with a suggestion of the experience they will have if they choose to fly with Air France. It is designed to capture the imagination and at the same time provides a strong brand message. In an almost surrealistic manner, Boucher has managed to illustrate the constellations as obtainable and encourages us to see the aeroplane as not just the master of the sky, but of the whole universe, connecting the passenger not merely to earthly destinations, but to the stars themselves.
