A set of six Chinese famille rose, armorial dishes, said to be made for James Laroche and Elizabeth Rachel Anne Yeomans, each one of octagonal form with the central arms of Laroche and Yeomans above the motto 'Otium in Negotio'.Qianlong. All about 23.5cm wide [6]See David Sanctuary Howard, Volume 1/page 587 for these arms. This service, thought to be circa 1765. A similar dish was sold at Bonham's in Edinburgh on 18-11-2015/Lot 310.There is also an underglaze blue decorated, service that has the Laroche Coat-of-Arms with Yeomans in pretence, and there is both a cup and a plate from it which is held by the British Museum [See the Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks Index Cards under 'Franks.757.+']. This second service offers some variation in design to the famille rose dishes here. An example from it was offered in Christie's [Asian Art Live Auction 2786/Lot 197].Condition Report: Please note that there is damage to this lot. The signatures are made on two cards with attached portrait photographs, one accompanied by a dedication "With good wishes" and dated 1974, the other dated 1973.Henryk Szeryng was an outstanding virtuoso who began his musical career studying with Bronislaw Huberman and Carl Flesch. After the outbreak of World War II, he served as the cultural attache of the Polish exile government in Mexico, where he later became a citizen and significantly contributed to the development of Mexican musical culture. As a soloist, he performed with leading world orchestras and was known for his brilliant technique and precise interpretation of repertoire ranging from Baroque to Romanticism.
