Late 16th century, based on the casting of Michelangelo Buonarroti's model."Christ"Gilded bronze sculpture with silver perizonium.22.5 x 21 cm.Cross Size: 52,5 x 29 cm.Magnificent gilded bronze Christ. This is one of the pieces obtained by casting bronze from the model by Michelangelo, which Juan Baptista Franconio, an Italian silversmith, brought to Seville in 1597 from Rome, where he settled.The significance of the Christ by Michelangelo was such that it was one of the inspirational works of art that led Juan Martínez Montañés to create his Christ of the Chalices. Francisco Pacheco recounts this in his posthumously published "Art of Painting" in Seville in 1649.He mentions that Martínez Montañés made this sculpture following the posture of another Christ, describing it as follows: "Michaelangelo, the illustrious light of painting and sculpture, made a crucifix with four nails for a model, which we can now enjoy. Juan Baptista Franconio, a brave silversmith, brought it to this city, cast in bronze, in 1597, and after enriching all painters and sculptors with it, he gave the original to Pablo de Céspedes, a canon of the Holy Church of Córdoba, who held it with great esteem around his neck." It is now known that the original is, for the moment, unaccounted for.Pacheco also specifies in his writing that he applied on January 17th (1600) a matte polychrome to the first of these four-nail crucifixes he cast.One of the painters whose work was enriched by being able to capture such a sculptural marvel on canvas, was Diego Velázquez, due to family ties, as he was Pacheco's son-in-law. In Anselmo López Morais' article “Crucifijo de Miguel Ángel (Un ejemplar en colección particular de Orense)” (Crucifix by Michelangelo (A specimen in a private collection in Ourense))' the 'two portraits he made in 1620 in Seville of Mother Jerónima de la Fuente (one in the Prado Museum in Madrid and another, where [the crucifix] can be seen clearly, in the Fernández Araoz Collection, also in Madrid)' are mentioned.Precisely this article is very useful in order to contrast similarities between this sculpture and the one mentioned by Michelangelo cast by Franconio. Among other things, it states: "The news from Pacheco was collected by Manuel Gómez-Moreno who, intrigued for a long time by a series of metal images obtained by casting, attributes them, with many doubts, to the Granada sculptor Alonso Cano, but later identifies them as those obtained from the Crucifix by Michelangelo mentioned in the 'Art of Painting'."López Morais continues quoting Gómez-Moreno to define the detailed characteristics of the 22 cm Crucifix: "it imposes by its very sobriety of resources, an imposing start that enlarges such a small work, [and] the body hangs limp, with absolute mass symmetry, as in real life; the head, which is small, falls on the chest and leans slightly to the right; the hands contract, clenched; the left leg crosses over the right, as revealed by Saint Brigid, flattening the calf upon contact, and the foot is deformed by the pressure of the nail; the almost embryonic nature of his virile organs matches a narrowness of hips that gives predominance to the chest over the other members; the belly sinks, and the complexion, emaciated, accentuates bony reliefs rather than muscles, except in the arms where tension makes even the arteries visible, but it is all modelled with unsurpassed delicacy and art."In Spain, there are several known silver or bronze specimens considered to be original castings from Franconio. Originals are found in the Museum of Caminos in Astorga, Palacio de Oriente in Madrid, the Gómez-Moreno Museum in Granada, the Caja de Ahorros de Segovia, the Cathedral of Seville, and the Ducal Palace of Gandía, among others. Some others are unsure whether they were cast from the original or even at that time.The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has a Christ and the two thieves in its collection with the registration number 37.28a–d, and currently attributes authorship for this figure of Christ as based on a model by Michelangelo Buonarroti. The question arises as to whether it was a casting made in Rome, a hypothesis supported by the context of the set, or whether, like ours, it is one of the examples made from Franconio, which is based, according to the MET, on "the quality of modeling and casting, both crisp and fluid, [which] brings it closer to numerous surviving silver copies in Spain". A 19th century tribal West African Benin bronze fish sculpture. The fish depicting with open elongated mouth, circular recurring motif scales, fin atop & mounted on four cylindrical feet. Unmarked.The 'Benin Bronzes' are a group of sculptures made up of elaborately decorated cast relief plaques, commemorative heads, animal and human figures. From the 1500s onwards they were created in the West African Kingdom of Benin to honour the Oba (king) in Benin City and celebrate their power and success. Many pieces were also commissioned specifically for the ancestral altars of past Obas, Queen Mothers and to validate the accession of a new Oba. Measuring approx. 47cm x 23cm.

Massa, Roma, mounted on a rectangular variegated purple marble base 29cm wide, 16cm high, 24cm deep Provenance: The Maisels Collection Note: Anton Van Wouw is known for his depictions of the indigenous people of South Africa and has been described as ‘the sculptor of national life’. Van Wouw was born in Driebergen, Holland in 1862. He studied at the Rotterdam Academy for Arts before moving to Pretoria in South Africa in 1890 and then to Johannesburg in 1906. Some of his finest work can be found in his portrayals of indigenous peoples, such as migrant workers from the Shangaan tribe in Mozambique, who worked in harsh and dangerous conditions in the gold mines of Transvaal. ‘The Mealiepap Eater’ depicts a Shangaan man eating mealiepap from a traditional pot with three legs. The model for this work is also the subject for his sculpture of a tribesman entitled ‘Shangaan’. Mealiepap is made from maize meal, a course flour made from maize, to produce porridge or a firmer pap which can be eaten with meat or vegetables. In 1907 Van Wouw received an inheritance from his father enabling him to cast his small bronzes at the Massa and Nisini foundries in Rome. The present lot is mounted on a separate marble base and this is how the Italian castings carried out in Van Wouw’s lifetime were presented, while later posthumous castings had an integral bronze base and show the right hand of the boy holding a stick above the pot rather than scraping food from it.For a recent example of ‘The Mealiepap Eater’ sold at auction see Bonhams South African Sale, 12th October 2021, lot 45.

plaster sculpture 10cm x 5cm x 7.5cm Provenance: The estate of the artist Note 1: Born in Scotland to Italian parents, Paolozzi attended evening classes at the Edinburgh College of Art and studied at St. Martin’s School of Art, later transferring to London’s Slade School of Art, where he graduated in 1947. He moved to Paris for three years where he became involved in Dadaism and Surrealism. In 1950, Paolozzi returned to London, quickly becoming a leading member of the Independent Group. As a significant member of the Group, Paolozzi greatly influenced the development of Pop Art. He taught all over the world as guest professor and lecturer, and was knighted in 1988. Eduardo Paolozzi died in 2005. Note 2 : Paolozzi began to make the quasi-cubist sculptures which were to figure among his signature works, in the 1970s. The plaster sculptures now offered for sale fit loosely into this aspect of his work, but were executed in the 1990’s. Paolozzi was particularly keen that plaster should achieve a higher status than had previously been the case and his works in the medium were often not cast in any other material. They were cast from a variety of sources, some being taken from the 'ready-mades' in his studio, while others were made to the artist's original, sometimes existing designs. There is a larger version of the Mondrian head in the National galleries of Scotland cast in Bronze and a similar work in Bronze conceived in 1993 sold in Christies on 21/10/21 for £56250 (Lot 154, The Molenick Collection) The Tate also have a version of the Mondrian Head which is cast in plaster. The Rabbit was among a number of small animal sculptures made specifically for the Arche Noah, (Noah's Ark), exhibition staged in Munich in 1990. In contrast heads were a constant in Paolozzi's work, from the 1950s onwards, and the large Cubist Head fits within a series made from the late 1980s into the 1990s. The Mondrian Head is clearly a comment upon the effects of technology upon our humanity. Perhaps the most personal of the plaster works here is the two clenched fists, which relates directly to those of Paolozzi's sculpture Daedalus, his body constructed from fragments on a Frankenstinian model. In Greek myth, Daedalus was the builder of the Cretan labyrinth and Paolozzi seems to have seen him as a kindred spirit and probably considered.

Brian Taylor F.R.B.S F.S.P.S (1935-2013) - Plaster - Bust of the Horse of Selene, on contemporary stand, 34ins x 33ins high Note: A Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and Vice Principal of the Society of Portrait Sculptors, Brian Taylor was a British sculptor, particularly well regarded for his studies of both human and animal forms. His love of the medium developed steadily in the years to follow, and in 1958 Taylor won a three-year scholarship to study sculpture in Rome. Italy proved to be a great influence on the artist, with both ancient and modernist sculpture fuelling his formative appreciation of sculptural styles, from life-size marble carvings to more modest clay portraits. The artist taught at the Camberwell School of Art between the years of 1965–1984. Horses were of particular interest, the Burano Horse among his most celebrated works, and his other monumental bronze sculptures featuring regularly in both group and solo exhibitions in England and Italy.
