A Silver Mounted Ceremonial Baton, with gold thread embroidered eagles on a blue ground, the silver end mounts inscribed TERRA BELLI DECUS PACIS, and with Louis Nikolas d`Avout Nomine Par l`Emporar Napoleon Marachal de Clumpierre le 29 Florbasoau 12e, one silver mount with indistinct early 20th century Birmingham hallmarks Louis Nikolas d`Avout 1770-1823 was regarded as one of Napoleon`s finest commanders, and his great abilities on the battle field and his reputation as a stern disciplinarian earned him the title The Iron Marshal. He became 1st Duc d`Auerstaedt, 1st Prince d`Eckmuhl and was Marshal of France under Napoleon. Despite his noble birth, he was Chef de Bation in the campaign of 1792 and served in the campaigns from 1794-1797. D`Avout, as he was generally known at this time, was one of the generals created a Marshal of France on the accession of Napoleon as Emperor. After the Battle of Auerstaedt it was said "At Gena Napoleon won a battle he could not lose at Auerstaedt, d`Avour won a battle he could not win". On the first restoration of the Bourbon Dynasty he retired into private life but rejoined Napoleon on the latter`s return from Elba, before finally in 1822 being elected mayor for Savigny-sur-Orge.

Francois-Hubert Drouais (1727-1775) A PORTRAIT OF LOUIS STANISLAS-XAVIER de FRANCE (Later Louis XVIII) WEARING THE CORDON BLEU OF L`ORDRE DE SAINT ESPRIT oil on canvas 73 x 58cms; 28 3/4 x 22 3/4in., oval stretcher. PROVENANCE: Collection of the Princess Faucigny-Lucinge et Coligny Collection of Lockington R Bunn Esq His sale, Messrs. Christie, Manson & Woods, Kings Street, London, Friday, June 1st 1934, Lot 69 Purchased by a Mr Whitaker for £52.10.00, thence by descent to the current vendor NB Louis Stanislas-Xavier of France 1755-1824, Comte de Provence was promoted to the Ordre de Saint-Esprit in February 1767, (Soixante-septième promotion, 2 février 1767) it is possible that this portrait commemorates this occasion. The noble house of Facingny-Lucinge et Colingy are descended by marriage from the Bourbons, via the marriage in 1823 to Charlotte Marie Augstine de Bourbon de France, daughter of Charles Ferdinand de Bourbon de France, duc de Berry and comte d`Artois. This fact probably explains the erroneous name plate to the frame, naming the subject as "comte d`Artois" See illustration

Autograph – Art and Artists – Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema ledger containing an inventory of the paintings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema from 1851 to 1912 with supplemental list of the paintings of his wife from 1872 to 1909 written throughout in Alma-Tadema from 1851 to 1912 with supplemental list of the paintings of his wife from 1872 to 1909 written throughout in Alma-Tadema’s hand with notifications on many works providing information on where exhibited customers commissions etc etc. The ledger also contains a number of original poems written by Alma-Tadema each assigned to specific pictures presumably as an analogue to the painting. Loosely inserted is a Dutch newspaper with an article about him and the original blotting paper used in the book. A remarkable find. This ledger was found recently on a rubbish tip and has remained unknown for many years. Alma-Tadema was one of the most significant artists of the late 19th and early 20th c in Britain. He was certainly one of the most famous and highly paid artists of his time and his commissions as listed in this ledger bear witness to this. Portraits include those of Paderewski Hans Richter the Duchess of Cleveland and Joseph Joachim – while customers include the Prince and Princess of Wales as well as leading galleries and institutions throughout the world. Yet at the end of the Victorian era his popularity faded and his paintings denounced. Ruskin for example dubbed him ‘the worst painter of the 19th c’ – and another critic said that his paintings were ‘about worthy enough to adorn bourbon boxes’. During this period you could obtain an Alma-Tadema original for as little as 20 pounds. Inevitably however during the last thirty years his art has been re-evaluated and he is now regarded as one of the foremost painters of classical subjects in the 19th c. As a result one of his most celebrated works The Finding of Moses dating from 1904 (and listed here as having been completed on December 29th of that year) sold at Christie’s New York in 1995 for 1.75million pounds. This ledger is also of considerable significance in that it lists all the paintings by Alma-Tadema’s beloved wife – herself a most accomplished artist. It is rare to say the least that such an important primary source of information on the works of a leading 19th c artist comes on the market and in this case it is a most fortunate act of rescue from a council rubbish tip.
