Comprising a donkey and a fox which are seated at the back, with two monkeys that dance at the front, one holding an instrument, alongside a dog and a cat dancing together. The animals are all dressed as humans would. The back of the piece has three mirrors which look onto the platform. Appears in a working order but possibly in need of a service. A late 19th/early 20th century German automaton, unsigned, c.1900, in form of a black clown with white painted face and hands, the mechanical movement making his head nod and mouth open, Papier Mache face, cardboard body, 55cm. Original clothing, working order, left thumb missing right thumb damaged, clothing dirty, face paint pealing in places.this example for auction is illustrative of a bygone culture in which there were different social norms. An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock with eight day movement striking on a bell, the 12-inch painted breakarch dial with foundry scene automaton to arch above black Arabic hour numerals, subsidiary seconds and date aperture, inscribed 'Aquilla Barber Bristol', the hood with swan neck pediment, above glazed door and fluted columns, the trunk with cut corners and rectangular door, on a plain base and plinth, height 212.5cm, with two weights and pendulum. Note: Aquilla Barber is a recorded clockmaker working in Bristol from 1781 to 1846. He died in Newport in 1849.

Cosmetically in generally good condition, though with some slight fur loss to rear legs and one seam slightly open to true left side. Appears to function well mechanically.

Automaton: A French, late 19th century, musical automaton, incorporating a fortified tower, medieval windmill, and a three masted Man-of-War flying the French tricolour with a hand painted view upon the glass dome. Mechanism will be operated by pull strings with various functions including moving a soldier, rocking the ship, turning the sails of the windmill, playing two airs, although it does need servicing. Printed label on the underside of the case "Musique a 2 Airs, La Marseillaise, Choeur des Girondins, and handwritten number to the bottom of the label", case measuring approx. 50cm width, 20cm depth, 49cm height.
