FRANCE, Théodore Géricault, 1966, a bronze medal by C. Auffret, bust right, rev. young man tied naked to a wild horse leaping left from an icy river, edge impressed 1966 bronze and cornucopia, 68mm, 170.94g (CGMP p.75). Extremely fine £20-£30
---
Provenance: Bt Simmons May 2007.
Jean-Louis-André-Théodore Géricault (1791-1824), painter and lithographer. The reverse is taken from Géricault’s painting Mazeppa, executed c. 1823, which illustrates the true story of the young Ukranian revolutionary Ivan Mazepa (1639-1709) who, as punishment for his adultery with a Polish countess, was tied naked to a wild horse. The horse was then set free to gallop through forests and steppes, nearly killing his mount during the ride. The story was retold by Byron in a poem of the same name, published in England in 1819, and in France by Amedée Pichot in 1822. Géricault chose to depict the stanza where horse and rider stagger exhausted from an icy river
