ENGLAND, Thomas Lawrence, 1860, a copper medal by G.G. Adams after E.H. Baily for the Art Union of London, bust left, rev. standing figure of the Duke of Wellington in cape and military uniform, holding a telescope, 56mm, 92.86g (Beaulah 12; Eimer 185; BHM 2676; E 1539; cf. Noonans 271, 981). Extremely fine, attractive patina £100-£150
---
Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), portrait painter, fourth president of the Royal Academy, 1820-30, painted the Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) eight times in a 15-year period. The reverse of the medal is taken from the picture painted by Lawrence in 1825 for Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), acquired by Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, in 1909 at the sale of Peel’s effects. His fellow Bristol-born artist and Academician, Edward Hodges Baily, is not known to have sculpted a portrait of Lawrence during the latter’s lifetime, but a marble bust of him executed in 1830 is held by the National Portrait Gallery
