India General Service 1895-1902, 1 clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (3056 Lce. Sargt. C. Webster. 1st. Devon: Regt.) edge bruise, contact marks, nearly very fine £80-£100 --- Charles John Webster was born in Barnstaple, Devon, in 1873. A Baker by occupation, he attested initially for the militia in June 1890 and subsequently for the Devonshire Regiment in August 1890. Posted to the 1st Battalion in Egypt and then India, he served with the Tirah Field Force 1897-98, before embarking for South Africa in September 1899 taking part in the actions at Elandslaagte, the Defence of Ladysmith, and in the Transvaal (entitled to a Queen’s South Africa Medals with clasps for Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith and Transvaal; and the King’s South Africa Medal with the usual two date clasps). His subsequent disciplinary record was not good being reduced in rank to Private before being discharged on 20 September 1905. He was last traced in the 1911 Census living in Glamorganshire and working in the mining industry. Sold with copied service record and other research.
