British War Medal 1914-20 (2.Lieut. D. H. L. Barnard.) good very fine £70-£90 --- Dudley Henry Lionel Barnard was born in London on 19 September 1894, the eldest son of Lionel Henry Barnard of 9 Chester Place, Regent's Park, London. Educated at Twyford School and Wellington College, he passed out of the R.M.A. Woolwich in August 1914 and was appointed to a commission in the Royal Regiment of Artillery on 11 August 1914. Posted across the Channel the following month as a French Interpreter, he was sent to 130th Battery, 30th Brigade, and was severely wounded directing his gun on the Western Front. The Reading Observer of 20 February 1915, offers a little more detail: 'He received his wounds at Ypres while in charge of a gun. His Major had been shot beside him, but he remained at his gun under heavy fire, until he was so injured that he had to be carried away.' Evacuated to Wimereux Hospital, Barnard died on 10 February 1915. His Major later wrote: 'He was a good soldier and a fine man'. Aged 21 years, Barnard is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery.
