An archive of manuscript correspondence & documents comprising: a passport for James Church to conduct a "journey of exploration in the interior of Africa", departing from the Pashalic of Tripoli to Central Africa, signed by George Frederick Herman, 11 June 1853; an uncoloured steel-engraved map of Africa published by George Cox, 1 January 1853, worn, 35 x 40cm; a passport for James F. Church to travel to Central America on the Public Service, 21 September 1857, lithographic signature of the Earl of Clarendon; an Autograph Letter Signed by Trelawny Saunders [Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society], 3 January 1855, on RGS letterhead, relaying information from Dr. Vogel & Dr. Barth [Eduard Vogel & Heinrich Barth, notable German explorers of Africa], "Macguire [John Maguire] does his utmost to assist me, and is making likewise accurate observations with the compass on the road. He is still tolerably weak and suffers greatly from erysipelas on both his feet, besides the sun has terribly burnt him in such a degree, that the skin is hanging down in pieces from his face & neck...He told me that Church had tried till the last moment to persuade him to return home likewise, and to leave me alone."; ALS by Trelawny Saunders on RGS letterhead to James Church, 17 June 1856, "The secretary wishes to know, whether with the permission of your Superior Officers, you are disposed to join the proposed expedition to Eastern Africa under Captain Burton [Sir Richard Francis Burton].", plus a note concerning Vogel's allegations of secret correspondence, ungentlemanly conduct and extortion, and another letter, 14 August 1856, indistinctly signed, "I mentioned to Captain Burton, who called here to-day, the fact of your having objected to form one of the party, and he was very sorry to be deprived of your services," and then requesting that Church visit Colonel Sykes at East India House; ALS by John Maguire, headed Kuka [capital of Bornu, Nigeria], 5 November 1856, "I thank the Lord I am still alive and likely to live to say farewell to this damnable country of filth and fanaticks...Dr Vogel left here for Wadai on the 1st day of this year from which place he has never returned and report says he was murdered two days from Wara the Capital"; ALS by George Frederick Herman, 1 June 1853, being a lengthy expedition memorandum for James Church & Edward Sweeney on 14pp, and a shorter memorandum similar, 26 July 1853, for Church & Maguire; ALS by James Church, 11 July 1856, a lengthy letter defending his own good conduct during the expedition into Central Africa, and outlining the poor conduct of others, including Dr Vogel who "spent several hours a day in company with a female who was the slave of his servant Massoud, by whom he was said to have been purchased for 80 dollars"; a manuscript copy of a character reference for James Church, Royal Engineers, 1868-69, describing his expeditions, including his role as photographer in Central America to determine the feasibility of constructing a railroad across the continent; ALS by Charles Thurston Thompson [early British photographer], 29 July 1859, attesting to James Church having studied photography under his direction; correspondence to James Church on British & Foreign Anti Slavery Society letterhead, 11 January 1856, "I have received & laid before the Committee the interesting narrative of your visit to the interior of Africa, & the Committee think it would do good were it published in our Reports. As there are statements in it, however, implicating Drs Barthe & Vogel in slave-trading, the Committee deem it desirable to have your permission to publish the same, which I therefore now solicit on their behalf." If items need to be sent abroad we shall assess these on an individual basis. Depending on the object and worth/size of parcel, Hansons will recommend using one of our couriers if we are unable to post your item in-house. We reserve the rights not to post items abroad if we deem unfit and think it will break.

We are not professional packers or shippers but do our utmost to pack items in a correct way which will ensure items arrive safely. However, Hansons Auctioneers will not be held responsible for making any claim. We may be able to make claims with Royal Mail or Parcelforce but cannot guarantee this.

There are some items that, due to their nature, size or weight, we cannot post out. However, we can recommend couriers and you can arrange for them to pick the item up from our saleroom/ London Office. They will also be able to insure some items which we are unable to insure.

*Please note this is a Timed Auction and therefore ONLINE ONLY, i.e. no room or absentee bidding. Bids may be placed at any point from the moment the catalogue goes live until the auction finishes. A bid at the last moment will create an extension of 10 minutes to provide a fair opportunity for the counter-bidder to come back if they so wish. It is not possible to bid by telephone or leave a commission bid.

Terms and Conditions of Business for Buyers

Care is taken to ensure that any statements as to authorship, attribution, origin, date, age, provenance and condition are reliable and accurate, but all such statements are statements of opinion and are not to be taken as statements or representations of fact. Hansons reserve the right, in forming their opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority reasonably considered by them to be reliable. All clients are advised they are entering into a contract with Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers under English Law and Jurisdiction.

1. The Buyer 
The highest bidder to be the buyer. If any dispute arises, the auctioneer shall have absolute discretion to settle it and to put any disputed lot up again for sale. 

2. Buyer Identification 
Buyers are requested to furnish references in advance of the sale in order to avoid delay in clearing purchases. Goods will not be cleared until such references have been processed or cheques cleared. Hanson’s reserve the right not to approve any online bidder when their registration credit check is not successful and who cannot provide references. Hansons will not accept commission bids for any buyer that has an outstanding invoice. 

3. Buyer’s Premium 
The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a buyer’s premium at the rate of 26.5% plus VAT. Please note that there is a minimum purchase charge of £6 plus VAT. Internet bidding incurs an additional 5% plus VAT charge. 
VAT is charged on Hanson’s services NOT on the goods and is payable at the standard rate set by the UK government. 
Any royalties eligible to be paid to a qualifying artist under the ‘Droit de Suite’ legislation will be added to the buyers invoice

4. Payment 
Immediately on the fall of the hammer, all lots shall be at the sole risk and expense of the respective purchasers 
All Bidders need to pay and arrange collection within 5 working days of the auction.
Failure to pay for goods within six weeks of the auction will result in the sale being rescinded. The defaulting buyer will also be blocked from bidding at future Hansons auctions.

5. Methods of Payment 
Cash, debit / credit card (via email payment request if not in person)or direct bank payment. 
Personal cheques will only be accepted at the discretion of Hanson’s Accounts and on the understanding that NO goods will be released until bank clearance of the cheque has completed. 

6. Collection / Shipment of Goods

All items must be collected in a timely manner else storage charges may be levied as our space is very limited.
All buyers / couriers must check their purchases prior to departure from the collection point. Hansons will accept no claims for loss or damage thereafter. 

 

7. Third Party Liability 
Every person at Hansons Auctions shall be deemed to be there at his own risk. They shall have no claim against Hansons in respect to any accident which may occur or injury, damage or loss howsoever caused. 

8. Rights of Admission 
The right is reserved to refuse admission to the auction premises and may be used by Hansons without giving a reason. 

9. Selling Rate 
Lots are sold at approximately 100 lots per hour
