Juz' X from a 20-volume Qur'an North Africa, 18th-19th Century Arabic manuscript on paper, 37 leaves, 11 lines to the page written in large maghribi script in brown ink with diacritics and vowel points in red, inner margins ruled in red, sura headings written in yellow with marginal devices extending into outer margins, other coloured marginal devices, contemporary leather binding, with flap 227 x 185 mm. Footnotes: Provenance With Arthur Probsthain, Great Russell Street, London. The Qur'an section is Juz' X from a 20-volume Qur'an, starting with a prayer, and containing sura XVI, al-Nahl, verse 51 up to sura XVIII, al-Kahf, parts of verse 71, and therefore including sura XVII, al-Isra'. On the last page is the sentence: 'And that was for His servant al-Hajj Muhammad bin al-Hajj Ahmad Muqni[?]'. A label in English pasted on to the front doublure reads: Found in the streets of Sfax [?], July 16th 1881/Thomas Chenery Esq., from A. W. Broadley [?]/A relic of the French invasion of Tunis. The French invaded Tunisia in April 1881 and conquered the country over several months, establishing their protectorate in October (which lasted until independence in 1956). Sfax is a coastal town approximately 250 miles south of Tunis, the capital. Lot to be sold without reserve. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
