FEDERAL BUREAU OF NARCOTICS. National List of Persons Known to be or Suspected of Being Engaged in the Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs. (As amended 10/1/50, 8/15/51, 9/25/53, and completely revised 1/1/58.) Washington, D.C.: Bureau of Narcotics, Treasury Department, [1958]. Oblong 12mo. Original maroon limp cloth, gilt Treasury Department seal and lettering to upper cover. Spine a bit loose, spine ends slightly frayed, minor soiling and handling wear. Provenance: DEA Agent John Windham, by direct descent to the present owner. A rare compendium of vital information — including names, aliases, photographs (typically mug shots), criminal histories and associations — on some 350 known drug traffickers, created by the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and issued to local and federal agents. Each two-page profile also includes entries for physical description, localities frequented, facsimile signature, modus operandi, a list of agencies with information about the suspect, and identification numbers. Among the more notorious criminals who appear in the album are Joseph and Frank Deluca, Carlo and Paolo Gambino, and Nicolo Impastato. The index is filled with aliases such as Andy the Goat, Blubberhead, Frankie the Bug, Freddy Red Shirt, Joe Chips, and Pink Cheeks. The Federal Bureau of Narcotics was created as an agency of the United States Treasury Department in 1930, and eventually evolved into the Drug Enforcement Agency under the United States Department of Justice. The present copy is stamped '60' and inscribed 'WINDHAM' in red ink on the title page, and contains several annotations in manuscript, with many of the suspects marked 'DECEASED.'
