BIBLE, FOR THE BLIND GALL (JAMES) The Gospel by St John for the Blind: with an Introduction, Containing Six Historical Notices Regarding the Origin and Establishment of a Tangible Literature for their Use, FIRST EDITION, 18pp. letterpress of introductory matter, 142 leaves embossed with 'angular type' for the Blind (including title dated 1832), light damp-staining to margins of introduction, publisher's cloth, original printed spine label (with price '£1.1s.'), worn, 4to, Edinburgh, James Gall, 1834 Footnotes: 'BIBLE FOR THE BLIND'. James Gall invented his embossed angular typeface in 1827 'expressly for reading by touch. It makes no distinction between upper-case and lower-case letters. There are fewer curves than in normal typefaces, and it is easy to distinguish letters... driven by the desire to make literature accessible to those who were blind' (National Library of Scotland website). Gall (1794-1874) was the founder of the Edinburgh Blind School, and although he announced plans for his 'Gospel' in 1827, it did not appear until 1834, with a title-page to the embossed text dated 1832. There are 157 subscribers listed, along with the names of 203 persons who donated to the cost, all but four of whom were based in Scotland. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
