An Unusual 25-Bore Flintlock Box-Lock Pistol With Spring Bayonet By Waters Of Birmingham, Circa 1780 With brass three-stage cannon barrel fitted with folding bayonet beneath, border engraved brass action (top jaw and screw replaced) signed within a scroll against rococo ornament on one side, and on the other with rococo ornament and foliage against a martial trophy, engraved thumbpiece safety-catch, sliding steel trigger-guard engraved with a flower-head on the bow (worn) and also forming the bayonet-catch, figured rounded butt, border engraved vacant brass escutcheon, brass grotesque mask butt-cap, and side-mounted ramrod with steel worm (tip missing), private Birmingham proof marks 19 cm. barrel Footnotes: This is an unusual variant of the more commonly found Waters patent blunderbuss-pistol. John Waters was granted British Patent No. 1824 on 9 March 1781 for attaching bayonets to pistols, and is generally credited with the invention of the spring bayonet. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
