AUTOGRAPH DAY BOOKS OF DR. KATE CAMPBELL MEAD. HURD-MEAD, KATE CAMPBELL. 1867-1941. Autograph notebooks signed on the covers ('Kate C. Mead' and 'Kate C. Mead, M.D.'), being her 'cash list' for her medical practice for the years 1901-1903, 3 volumes, each 210 x 143 mm, approximately 125 pp written in ink on smaller sheets pasted into standard lined cloth-bound notebooks, each titled on the cover 'No II ... Nov 1, 1901-Feb 28, 1902,' 'No III ... March 1, 1902 to Oct. 31, 1902,' and 'No. V ... June 1, 1903,' some soiling to covers, interior clean. AUTOGRAPH ACCOUNT BOOKS FOR THE MEDICAL PRACTICE OF KATE CAMPBELL HURD-MEAD, MD, FOR THE YEARS 1901-1903. Kate Campbell Hurd-Mead was a pioneering female physician and feminist. She followed her father into medicine and in 1891 at Bryn Mawr School for Girls established the Evening Dispensary For Working Women and Girls, the first woman-focused institution of its kind. She married in 1893, and she and her husband moved to Middletown, CT, where she opened a practice focusing on gynecology. In 1907, she helped found the Middlesex County Hospital, and operated as the consulting gynecologist there until she retired in 1925. She continued her pioneering work however, now as a medical historian focusing on the role of women. Her 1938 book A History of Women in Medicine, from the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Nineteenth Century remains a landmark in the history of medicine, the first comprehensive history of women in the field.
