A WILLIAM VANDERBILT ENDORSED CHICAGO, BURLINGTON AND QUINCY STOCK CERTIFICATE. VANDERBILT, WILLIAM HENRY. 1821-1885. Document Endorsed ('W.M. Vanderbilt') on verso of Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company engraved stock certificate for 100 shares, 1 p, 4to (185 x 265 mm), New York, November 23, 1880, mild toning, matted and framed to (460 x 865 mm. Provenance: Private Collection, Beverly Hills, California. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was chartered in 1848 by the Illinois legislature as the Aurora Branch Road. Over time it expanded throughout Illinois and Indiana, eventually pushing westward as far as Billings, MT. Eventually it was incorporated into the Great Northern Railway. William Henry 'Billy' Vanderbilt was the eldest son of Cornelius Vanderbilt and a business tycoon in his own right. The CB&Q RR was just one of many railway holdings in his vast portfolio, which also included the firms he led, such as the New York Central and Hudson River Railway and the Canada Southern Railway.
