A French ormolu mounted tortoiseshell and brass 'Boulle' marquetry ebonised and rosewood bureau Mazarin The main section: late Louis XIV period (circa 1715) but the replaced legs and stretchers are of a later date (probably early 19th century) Inlaid with Arabesques of flowers, scrolled stylised foliage, flaming urns, husks, bellflowers, masks, classical figures, putti, dogs, monkeys, birds, butterflies and squirrels, with one long central and two short walnut lined frieze drawers, above four short walnut lined drawers flanking a central recess with a hinged fall front, on eight animalistic and cabriole legs each modelled with a winged Hercules mask and cast with scroll work and a palmette, terminating in claw feet, most of the detached segments of the brass inlay are present, 98cm wide x 58cm deep x 84.5cm high, (38 1/2in wide x 22 1/2in deep x 33in high) Footnotes: Provenance The offered lot was previously at Portmore House, Peebles, in Scotland.
