FIVE WOOD NETSUKE Japan, late Edo/Meiji era, 19th/20th century Comprising a cicada, signed Matsuyoshi; a skeleton with skull, signed Ryugetsu; a tiger, signed Ishikawa; a ningyo human fish, signed Masakazu; and a hat, signed Morikazu. 2 1/2in (6.3cm) height of tallest (5). Footnotes: Provenance: Collection of Col. Dean S. Hartley, Jr., USMC (1920-2010), by descent to the present owner. Col. Hartley was a scholar who published several articles on Asian art and, with his wife, Roth Hartley, collected Asian works of art from the mid-1950s until 2001.
