American Horseman's Pistol, mid-18th century. 10 1/2 in., .62 caliber octagon to round barrel with brass blade front sight; convex lock with pointed tail; hard wood (possibly butternut) stock with raised carved plateaus around the lock mortice and side plate, relief carved plateau and foliate decoration around breech plug tang and relief carved plateau around the rammer channel; brass furniture including a trigger guard with leaf finial, butt cap with pointed tang, flat side plate with pointed tail and ring decorated sheet brass rammer and entry pipes, later wood rammer. Overall lg. 16 1/2 in. Condition: Barrel and lock have scattered gray mottling and very light associated pitting, vent has brass bushing, lock mainspring has been repaired, one side nail is a modern restoration; right side of stock has an approx. 3 1/2 in. crack from the front of the lock mortice forward and similarly on the left side, wood loss at the top of the rear portion of the lock mortice; brass toned to yellow.
