Martin Battersby (British, 1914-1982) A partial design for the interior decoration of the ballroom at the Carlyle Hotel, New York Pencil, ink, watercolour and oil on board 25.5 x 73.5cm (10 1/16 x 28 15/16in). Footnotes: The sphinx is a recurring motif in Battersby's oeuvre and, in 1959, he was commissioned to paint the murals for the Sphinx Room at the Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue, New York. Sadly no longer in existence, this partial design is a lasting token of the grandeur of the rooms. For an illustration of Martin Battersby, showing the artist and the complete marquette of his 'Sphinx' project within the completed ballroom decorations, photographed by Angus McBean in 1960, see: Martin Battersby, The Decorative Twenties, ed. by Philippe Garner, The Herbert Press, 1988, p. 15 (foreword).
